Windows 11 Home: Download, Install & Activation Guide

Softkeyworld Team · 02 October 2026

To download, install and activate Windows 11 Home, get the official installer from Microsoft's Windows 11 download page (Installation Assistant, Media Creation Tool or ISO), install the Home edition, sign in with a Microsoft account during setup, then enter your 25-character product key under Settings > System > Activation. Activation is online and usually takes under a minute.

This guide covers every Windows 11 Home key we sell, whether you bought a Windows 11 Home licence, an OEM key or a retail key. The installation steps are identical for both licence types; the only difference is what happens later if you change your hardware, which we explain below. Your key arrives by email straight after payment, so you can work through this guide as soon as the order is confirmed.

What you need before you start

  • Your 25-character Windows 11 Home product key (check your order email, including the spam folder).
  • A PC that meets the Windows 11 requirements below, including TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot.
  • An internet connection and a Microsoft account. Windows 11 Home setup requires both to finish the out-of-box experience (OOBE).
  • A blank USB flash drive of at least 8 GB if you plan to clean install or install on another PC.
  • A backup of your files. A clean install erases the drive you install to.
Component Minimum requirement
Processor 1 GHz or faster, 2 or more cores, on a compatible 64-bit processor or SoC
Memory (RAM) 4 GB
Storage 64 GB or larger
System firmware UEFI, Secure Boot capable
TPM Trusted Platform Module version 2.0
Graphics DirectX 12 compatible with a WDDM 2.0 driver
Display HD (720p), larger than 9 inches diagonally, 8 bits per colour channel
Setup Internet connection and a Microsoft account (required for Windows 11 Home)

These figures come from Microsoft's official Windows 11 specifications. The requirement that stops most older PCs is TPM 2.0. Many desktops and laptops from the last several years have a firmware TPM that is simply switched off, so before you assume your hardware is too old, follow our guide on how to enable TPM 2.0 in the BIOS and run the PC Health Check app again.

OEM or retail: does it matter?

Both OEM and retail Windows 11 Home keys install the same software and activate the same way. An OEM licence is tied to the first PC it activates on and is intended to stay with that machine. A retail licence can be moved to a new PC, provided you remove it from the old one first. If you build or upgrade PCs regularly, retail gives you that flexibility; if the key is for one PC you plan to keep, OEM does the job.

Step 1: Download Windows 11 Home

Always download Windows 11 from Microsoft directly. The Windows 11 software download page offers three tools, and all of them include the Home edition:

  1. Open the Windows 11 download page on microsoft.com in your browser.
  2. Windows 11 Installation Assistant: choose this to upgrade the Windows 10 PC you are using now, keeping your files and apps.
  3. Create Windows 11 Installation Media: choose this to run the Media Creation Tool, which builds a bootable USB drive for a clean install or for another PC.
  4. Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO): choose this if you prefer an ISO file, for example for a virtual machine or to make a USB with a tool such as Rufus. Select Windows 11 (multi-edition ISO), your language, then the 64-bit download.
  5. If you use the Media Creation Tool, accept the licence terms, keep the recommended language and edition, choose USB flash drive and select your drive. The tool downloads Windows and writes the USB for you.

The multi-edition media contains Home, Pro and several other editions. Which edition is installed is decided by the product key you enter, or by a key already embedded in your PC's firmware.

Step 2: Install Windows 11 Home

Clean install from USB

  1. Insert the USB drive, restart the PC and open the boot menu (commonly F12, F11, F8 or Esc, depending on the manufacturer). Select the USB drive.
  2. Choose your language, time and keyboard layout, then select Install Windows 11.
  3. When asked for a product key, enter your Windows 11 Home key. You can also select I don't have a product key and activate later, in which case choose Windows 11 Home from the edition list. Picking the wrong edition here is the most common cause of activation errors.
  4. Accept the licence terms. For a fresh start, choose the custom install option, then delete or select the partition where Windows will be installed. Make sure your files are backed up first.
  5. Windows copies files and restarts several times. Leave the USB drive in but do not press a key to boot from it again.

Out-of-box setup and the Microsoft account

  1. Choose your region and keyboard layout.
  2. Connect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Windows 11 Home will not continue setup without an internet connection.
  3. Sign in with your Microsoft account, or create one for free. Microsoft requires this for Home edition setup. Your digital licence is later linked to this account, which makes reactivation after a hardware change much easier.
  4. Create a PIN, choose your privacy settings and decide whether to restore from a previous PC or set up as new.
  5. Let Windows finish preparing the desktop, then run Windows Update to get the latest drivers and security fixes.

If you want to use a local account day to day, you can add one after setup under Settings > Accounts > Other users. The initial setup itself still needs the Microsoft account sign-in.

Upgrading an existing Windows 10 PC

Run the Installation Assistant, accept the terms and let it download and install Windows 11. Your files and apps are kept. If your Windows 10 Home was already activated, Windows 11 Home normally activates automatically; if not, enter your new key using Step 3.

Step 3: Activate Windows 11 Home

If you entered your key during installation, Windows activates on its own once it is online. If you skipped the key, activate it like this:

  1. Open Settings > System > Activation (or press Windows + R, type ms-settings:activation and press Enter).
  2. Select Change product key next to Change product key.
  3. Type your 25-character Windows 11 Home key and select Next.
  4. Select Activate. Windows contacts Microsoft's activation servers and confirms the licence.
  5. You will see Windows is activated once it succeeds.

Command-line alternative

You can also activate from an elevated Command Prompt or Terminal (right-click Start, choose Terminal (Admin)):

  1. Install the key: slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
  2. Activate online: slmgr /ato
  3. Wait for the confirmation dialog that says the product was activated successfully.

If your key is valid for Windows 11 Pro rather than Home, or you later want Pro features such as BitLocker management and Remote Desktop hosting, our guide on upgrading Windows 11 Home to Pro walks you through the edition change without reinstalling.

Verify activation

  • Go to Settings > System > Activation. The Activation state should read Active, ideally with Windows is activated with a digital licence linked to your Microsoft account.
  • Check the edition at the top of the same page: it should say Windows 11 Home.
  • From the command line, run slmgr /xpr to see whether the machine is permanently activated, or slmgr /dlv for detailed licence information including the partial product key.

Linking the licence to your Microsoft account matters most for retail keys. After a major hardware change, such as a new motherboard, you can run the Activation troubleshooter, select I changed hardware on this device recently and reactivate without contacting support.

Troubleshooting common activation errors

Frequently asked questions

Can I install Windows 11 Home without a Microsoft account?

Not during initial setup. Microsoft states that Windows 11 Home requires an internet connection and a Microsoft account to complete device setup. Once Windows is running you can add a local account and use that instead.

Is a Windows 11 Home OEM key genuine?

Yes. OEM keys are genuine Microsoft licences that activate on Microsoft's own servers. The main difference from retail is that an OEM licence stays with the first PC it is activated on.

Do I need TPM 2.0 for Windows 11 Home?

Yes. TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are part of the official minimum requirements. Many PCs have a firmware TPM that only needs enabling in the BIOS or UEFI settings.

Can I activate Windows 11 Home with a Windows 11 Pro key?

No. A Pro key will either be rejected on Home or prompt Windows to upgrade the edition to Pro. Home keys only activate Windows 11 Home.

How long does Windows 11 Home activation take?

Online activation usually completes in under a minute once the PC is connected to the internet. Your key itself is emailed instantly after payment.

Can I move my Windows 11 Home licence to a new PC?

A retail licence can be transferred once it is removed from the old PC. An OEM licence is designed to stay with the device it was first activated on.

Ready to activate Windows 11 Home?

Windows 11 Home is the right fit for home users, students and families who want a modern, secure version of Windows without the business management tools of Pro. Choose a retail key for flexibility or an OEM key for a single PC, follow the steps above, and you will be up and running quickly. Keys are emailed instantly, and our team is on hand at support@softkeyworld.com if you need help at any stage.
