Windows 11 26H2 Is Here: Every New Feature and How to Install It

Softkeyworld Team · 03 October 2026

Windows 11 version 26H2 (the "2026 Update", build 26300) was released on 29 September 2026. On PCs running 24H2 or 25H2 it installs as a small enablement package through Windows Update, needing one restart. It brings no new hardware requirements and resets support to 24 months for Home and Pro, or 36 months for Enterprise and Education.

Key takeaways

  • 26H2 shares its code base with 24H2 and 25H2. Most of the "new" features have already been arriving through monthly updates, and 26H2 locks them in.
  • The biggest reason to install it is support. Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro reach end of servicing on 13 October 2026.
  • Devices on 26H1 (the Arm-only release for new Snapdragon X2 PCs) are not offered 26H2.
  • PCs on 23H2 or older, and clean installs, need the full upgrade by ISO, Installation Assistant or Media Creation Tool.

What is Windows 11 26H2?

26H2 is the annual feature update for Windows 11 in 2026. Microsoft's own Windows 11 version 26H2 update history calls it a streamlined update: for most eligible PCs, moving to 26H2 means installing a small enablement package with a minimal download, a quick install and a single restart.

The approach makes sense once you know how the update is built. Version 24H2 (build 26100), 25H2 (build 26200) and 26H2 (build 26300) all run on the same underlying platform, which Microsoft calls "Germanium". The feature code for 26H2 has been shipped to 24H2 and 25H2 PCs in a dormant state through the monthly cumulative updates. The enablement package, delivered as KB5121794, simply switches it on and changes the version number. It is a few hundred kilobytes, not a 4 GB download.

Enablement package vs full upgrade

Your current version How you get 26H2 Typical time
Windows 11 25H2 (build 26200) Enablement package via Windows Update Minutes, one restart
Windows 11 24H2 (build 26100) Enablement package via Windows Update Minutes, one restart
Windows 11 23H2 or earlier Full feature update (new OS image) 45–90 minutes, several restarts
Windows 11 26H1 (Arm, Bromine platform) Not offered; stays on the 26H1 branch n/a
Windows 10 Full upgrade if the hardware qualifies 60–120 minutes

To use the enablement package, the PC must already have the September 2026 cumulative update (KB5124010, released 22 September) or newer. If Windows Update offers you nothing, install the latest cumulative update first and check again.

Every notable feature in Windows 11 26H2

To set expectations: Microsoft itself says many 26H2 features "might already be familiar", because Windows now releases features gradually all year round. Microsoft's release notes name three headline items for commercial PCs. These are Windows settings backup, app-specific taskbar actions and File Explorer improvements. Around them sits a set of features tested in the Insider channels over the past year, which roll out gradually. Some may not appear on your PC on day one even after 26H2 is installed.

Taskbar and Start menu

  • Taskbar position and size. You can move the taskbar to the top, left or right again, and choose a smaller taskbar for compact screens, under Settings → Personalization → Taskbar → Taskbar behaviors.
  • App-specific taskbar actions. Right-clicking a pinned app shows actions that app exposes, much like jump lists but richer.
  • Start menu sizing and sections. Choose Small, Large or Automatic layouts, show or hide the Pinned, Recommended and All sections independently, and optionally hide your account name and picture.

File Explorer and Search

  • Faster deletion of large or fragmented files, and a quicker-loading Home page.
  • A customisable right-click menu (Settings → Personalization → Context menu), with OneDrive commands grouped into their own submenu.
  • Windows Search options to hide web results and Microsoft Store suggestions, a welcome change for business PCs.

Security and recovery

  • Administrator Protection. An opt-in model in which admin accounts run without elevated rights until a Windows Hello confirmation grants a short-lived elevated token. You turn it on in Windows Security → Account protection or through Group Policy.
  • Cloud Rebuild and recovery networking. From the Windows Recovery Environment (Troubleshoot → Cloud Rebuild), a broken PC can reinstall Windows over the internet. WinRE can also now reuse saved Wi-Fi profiles.
  • Windows settings backup. Settings and preferences sync to your Microsoft account, so a rebuilt or replacement PC picks up where you left off.

Updates, performance and accessibility

  • Task Manager NPU columns. On Copilot+ PCs you can now see NPU utilisation and NPU memory per process.
  • Calmer Windows Update. Calendar-based pausing, driver category labels and fewer separate restarts when drivers and quality updates arrive together.
  • Accessibility. Screen Tint presets (Settings → Accessibility), per-monitor Magnifier zoom, and Narrator reading of maths equations in Microsoft 365 apps.
  • Touchpad and sound settings. An adjustable right-click zone, scrolling speed options and a redesigned "All sound devices" page.

If one of these features is missing after the update, that is normal. Microsoft enables them in stages per device. Keeping Get the latest updates as soon as they're available switched on puts you near the front of that queue.

System requirements

26H2 introduces no new hardware requirements. If your PC runs 24H2 or 25H2 today, it qualifies. For anyone upgrading from Windows 10 or building a new PC, the published Windows 11 specifications still apply:

Component Minimum
Processor 1 GHz or faster, 2+ cores, 64-bit, on Microsoft's supported CPU list (must support SSE4.2 and POPCNT)
Memory 4 GB RAM
Storage 64 GB or larger
Firmware UEFI with Secure Boot capability
Security chip TPM 2.0
Graphics / display DirectX 12 / WDDM 2.0; 720p display larger than 9 inches

The two checks that fail most often are TPM and Secure Boot being disabled in firmware, even on hardware that supports them. Our guide on how to enable TPM 2.0 in the BIOS covers the menu names used by the main board vendors. If PC Health Check still complains, work through fixing the "This PC can't run Windows 11" error.

How to install Windows 11 26H2 now

Method 1: Windows Update (recommended for 24H2/25H2)

  1. Check your version first. Press Win + R, type winver and press Enter. You should see version 24H2 or 25H2.
  2. Open Settings → Windows Update.
  3. Turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they're available.
  4. Click Check for updates. Install any pending cumulative update first and restart if asked.
  5. When Windows 11, version 26H2 appears, click Download & install, then restart.
  6. Run winver again. It should now report version 26H2, OS build 26300.xxxx.

If the offer does not appear, your device may be on a temporary compatibility hold (Microsoft lists these in the Windows release health dashboard) or simply not yet in the rollout wave. Waiting a few days is the safest choice. Forcing an install past a safeguard hold is how people end up with broken audio or display drivers.

Method 2: Windows 11 Installation Assistant

Use this for an in-place upgrade from 23H2 or Windows 10 that keeps your apps and files. Download it from Microsoft's official Windows 11 download page, run Windows11InstallationAssistant.exe, accept the licence terms and let it work. Expect an hour or more and several restarts. Keep the laptop on mains power.

Method 3: ISO or bootable USB (clean install)

From the same Microsoft page you can download the multi-edition ISO, or use the Media Creation Tool to build an 8 GB+ USB stick. Then either:

  • double-click the ISO in File Explorer to mount it and run setup.exe for an in-place upgrade, or
  • boot from the USB (usually F12, F11 or Esc at power-on) for a clean install that wipes the drive.

Only use Microsoft's own download. Modified "lite" ISOs circulating online strip out security components and are a common source of problems. Our Windows 11 Pro download, install and activation walkthrough covers the clean-install screens step by step, including how to pick the Pro edition during setup.

What about activation?

An enablement package or in-place upgrade keeps your existing activation. On a clean install, a PC that was previously activated reactivates automatically through its digital licence once online. A brand-new build, or a move from Home to Pro, needs a product key. Enter it under Settings → System → Activation → Change product key. The command-line equivalent, from an elevated terminal, is slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX followed by slmgr /ato.

Troubleshooting common 26H2 install problems

  • 0x800f0922 or 0x800f081f. Usually a corrupted component store. Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, then sfc /scannow, restart and retry.
  • 0xC1900101 during a full upgrade. A driver problem. Update storage, chipset and graphics drivers, disconnect non-essential USB devices and temporarily uninstall third-party antivirus.
  • Stuck on "Getting Windows ready". Give it at least an hour before intervening. If it is still stuck, our Getting Windows ready stuck fix walks through safe recovery.
  • Need to go back? An enablement package can be removed under Settings → Windows Update → Update history → Uninstall updates. A full upgrade can be rolled back within 10 days via Settings → System → Recovery → Go back.

Rolling out 26H2 on business PCs

Managed devices follow your policies, not the consumer toggle. In Windows Update for Business or Intune, 26H2 appears as a feature update that you target through a feature update profile or the "Target Version" policy, set to 26H2 with product Windows 11. WSUS and Configuration Manager receive the enablement package as a separate update to approve. Because 25H2 and 26H2 share a code base, compatibility testing is lighter than in the years when every feature update replaced the whole OS. Pilot it on a small group for a week, watch for driver or line-of-business app complaints, then widen the ring. Small offices without central management can update each PC from Settings → Windows Update. Do it outside working hours, because even an enablement package needs a restart.

Support dates: why you shouldn't sit on 24H2

Version Home / Pro support ends Enterprise / Education support ends
24H2 13 October 2026 October 2027
25H2 October 2027 October 2028
26H2 October 2028 October 2029

If you are on 24H2 Home or Pro, this month's Patch Tuesday is your last security update unless you move on. Windows Update will start pushing 26H2 automatically to devices approaching end of servicing, but doing it yourself means you choose the timing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Windows 11 26H2 a free update?

Yes. Any genuinely licensed Windows 11 PC gets 26H2 at no cost through Windows Update. You only need a new licence for a new PC, a change of edition, or a move up from a Windows 10 PC that has no digital licence.

What build number is 26H2?

26H2 uses the 26300 build series. At launch the build was 26300.9550, and the revision number rises with each monthly cumulative update.

Will 26H2 delete my files or apps?

No. The enablement package and in-place upgrades keep files, apps and settings. Only a clean install from USB erases the drive. Back up first regardless.

Why don't I see 26H2 in Windows Update?

The rollout is phased. Your device may be on a compatibility hold, be missing the September cumulative update, or be running 26H1, which is not offered 26H2.

Does 26H2 need a newer PC than 25H2?

No. The hardware requirements are unchanged. TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and a supported 64-bit CPU are still required.

Do I need Windows 11 Pro for the new features?

Most 26H2 features are in Home and Pro alike. Pro adds BitLocker management, Hyper-V, Group Policy, Remote Desktop hosting and domain join, which matter for business PCs. A Home device can move up with a Windows 11 Home to Pro upgrade key without reinstalling.

Our recommendation

For PCs already on 24H2 or 25H2, install 26H2 now through Windows Update. It is low-risk, quick and extends your support to October 2028. If you are building a new machine or doing a clean install, start from Microsoft's official ISO and activate with a genuine Windows 11 Pro licence. That gives you the business features (BitLocker, Remote Desktop, Group Policy) from day one.
