Office errors 30015 and 30088 mean the Click-to-Run installer could not finish. The usual causes are an existing or partly removed Office installation, security software or a proxy blocking the download, missing folder permissions, or an installer run from the wrong location. Remove old Office completely, restart, then reinstall as administrator from the C: drive or with the offline installer.

"Something went wrong. Sorry, we ran into a problem." It is one of the least helpful messages in Windows, and the code underneath it is often the only clue. Codes beginning with 30015 and 30088 are among the most common Office installation failures we help customers with. Both come from the Click-to-Run engine that installs Office 2016 and later, Office 2019, 2021 and 2024 and Microsoft 365 Apps. The good news is that the fixes overlap almost completely, and in most cases one clean uninstall and a careful reinstall solves the problem.
Work through the steps below in order. Each one rules out a cause, and the early steps take only minutes.
Key takeaways
- The number in brackets after the code, such as (5) or (13), is usually a Windows error that points to the real cause.
- Leftover or conflicting Office installations cause more 30088 errors than anything else.
- Running the installer from a secondary drive, network share or synced folder often triggers 30015 errors.
- If the online installer keeps failing, the Office Deployment Tool installs from a local copy.
How to read the error code
Office installation errors follow the pattern AAAAA-BBBB (C). The first number identifies the stage that failed, the second a sub-step, and the bracketed value is often a standard Windows system error. That last number is worth noting. For example, (5) is "access denied", and 2147942405 is the decimal form of 0x80070005, which is also access denied.
| Code seen | Most likely cause | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| 30015-4 (5) | Permissions on the installation source or Office data folders | Steps 2 and 5 |
| 30015-11 (2147942405) | Access denied, often from security software or permissions | Steps 3 and 5 |
| 30015-2030 (13) | Installer run from a secondary drive or a damaged download | Step 2 |
| 30088-4 | Existing Office, antivirus/firewall, or proxy settings | Steps 1 and 3 |
| 30088-26 | FSLogix rules hiding Office executables (managed environments) | Step 8 |
| Other 30015 / 30088 suffixes | Download or file access interrupted | Steps 1–6 in order |
Before you start: quick checks
- Restart the PC. A pending Windows Update restart can lock files that the installer needs.
- Free up space. Make sure at least 10 GB is free on C:. Office needs about 4 GB, plus room for the download cache.
- Use a stable connection. Use a wired or reliable Wi-Fi connection rather than a metered hotspot.
- Check the date and time. Wrong clock settings break the secure download connections.
- Check the installer matches your licence. A Professional Plus volume key and a Home & Business retail key use different installation routes. If you are unsure which you have, our comparison of Home & Business 2024 and Professional Plus 2024 explains the difference.
Step-by-step fixes
Step 1: Remove every existing Office installation
Click-to-Run cannot install a version alongside a different one installed by a different technology or channel. Examples include a preinstalled Microsoft 365 trial, an older MSI-based Office 2013/2016, or a half-removed earlier attempt. Microsoft's own answer to 30088-4 names a pre-existing Office suite as one of the main causes.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search for "Office", "Microsoft 365", "Visio", "Project" and "OneNote".
- Uninstall every Office-family entry, including language packs. Visio and Project matter too: mixing their MSI and Click-to-Run versions with the new suite causes conflicts.
- If an entry will not uninstall, or nothing is listed but the error continues, run Microsoft's Office uninstall troubleshooter, which removes Click-to-Run and MSI remnants.
- Restart. This is not optional, because the Click-to-Run service holds files open until you do.
Step 2: Run the installer as administrator, from C:
The 30015 family often appears when OfficeSetup.exe (or setup.exe) is launched from a second internal drive, a USB stick, a network share or a folder synced by OneDrive. In a Microsoft Q&A thread about 30015-2030 (13), the user's fix was simply moving the installation files to a folder on C:.
- Create
C:\Temp. - Download a fresh copy of the installer into it. Don't reuse an old copy.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
Step 3: Temporarily remove network and security interference
Third-party antivirus, firewalls, VPN clients and proxies can interrupt the download or quarantine installer files partway through. That shows up as a 30088 or 30015 error rather than a clear warning.
- Disconnect any VPN and pause third-party security software just for the installation. Microsoft Defender does not need to be turned off.
- Check for a system proxy by running
netsh winhttp show proxyin an administrator Terminal. If one is listed and you are not on a corporate network that needs it, runnetsh winhttp reset proxy. - In Settings > Network & internet > Proxy, make sure no manual proxy is set unless it is required.
Turn your security software back on as soon as Office has installed.
Step 4: Check the Click-to-Run and Windows Installer services
Press Win + R, run services.msc, and confirm that Windows Installer is not disabled. If Microsoft Office Click-to-Run Service (ClickToRunSvc) is still present from a previous installation and stuck in a Stopping state, restart the PC before trying again. "Debloat" scripts sometimes disable these services, and that breaks every later Office installation.
Step 5: Fix folder permissions and clear leftovers
For 30015-4 (5), which reads "we ran into a problem accessing a required file", check the permissions on C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Office. Right-click the folder, choose Properties > Security, and confirm that SYSTEM and Administrators have Full control. Then, after uninstalling as in Step 1:
- Delete the contents of
%temp%. Skip any files that are in use. - If an empty
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Officefolder orC:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRunremains, rename it (for example by adding .old) rather than deleting it, so you can restore it if needed. - Restart and reinstall.
Step 6: Install offline with the Office Deployment Tool
If the online installer keeps failing, separate the download from the installation. The Office Deployment Tool (ODT) downloads the full source to a local folder first, then installs from it. For a volume-licensed Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 key, Microsoft's LTSC 2024 deployment guide uses the product ID ProPlus2024Volume and the channel PerpetualVL2024.
- Download the ODT from Microsoft and extract it to
C:\ODT. - Create
configuration.xmlspecifying 64-bit, thePerpetualVL2024channel, theProPlus2024Volumeproduct with your language, andRemoveMSIto clear older MSI Office. - In an administrator Terminal in
C:\ODT, runsetup.exe /download configuration.xmland wait for the Office folder to finish downloading. - Run
setup.exe /configure configuration.xml.
Our Office 2024 Pro Plus installation guide includes a ready-to-use configuration and the activation steps that follow. For retail editions such as Home & Business, use the installer from your Microsoft account; the Home & Business 2024 guide shows where to find the offline option.
Step 7: Try a clean boot
Background utilities such as backup agents, "PC optimisers" and device management tools can lock files during installation. Run msconfig, open the Services tab, tick Hide all Microsoft services, click Disable all, then disable startup items in Task Manager and restart. Install Office, then reverse the changes.
Step 8: Error 30088-26 in managed or virtual desktops
On Azure Virtual Desktop or other environments using FSLogix application masking, Microsoft documents that error 30088-26 occurs when a rule hides OfficeClickToRun.exe or other Office executables. List the rules with "C:\Program Files\FSLogix\Apps\frx.exe" list-rules, remove any that hide Office, uninstall Office, restart and reinstall. This is a task for your IT administrator.
Step 9: Test with a new local administrator account
If everything above fails, a damaged user profile may be the cause. Create a new local administrator under Settings > Accounts > Other users, sign in to it and run the installer there. If that works, Office is then available to all users on the PC. If it still fails, repair Windows itself with DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth followed by sfc /scannow.
Reading the installation logs
When the on-screen code is not enough, the Click-to-Run logs usually name the file or URL that failed. Type %temp% into File Explorer's address bar and sort by date modified. The installer writes text logs named after your computer with a date and time stamp (for example DESKTOP-ABC123-20261101-0915.log). Some are also written to C:\Windows\Temp. Open the newest one in Notepad and search for "error" or the code you saw. In our experience, the lines just above the first error are the useful ones. They typically show an "access denied" on a specific path (which points to Step 5), a timed-out download (Steps 3 and 6), or a detected conflicting product (Step 1).
If you contact support, attaching the newest log saves a lot of back-and-forth.
Why brand-new PCs hit these errors so often
Many laptops arrive with a Microsoft 365 trial or an "Office" placeholder already installed. These are Click-to-Run products on a different channel from Office 2024. When you run a new installer on top of them, the conflict often shows up as a 30088 code. Language can also cause problems: a UK-English Office installer meeting a preinstalled trial in another language may refuse to continue. On any new machine, we recommend checking Installed apps and removing the trial before installing your purchased version.
How to avoid installation errors next time
- Uninstall the old version and restart before installing a new one, even if the setup screen says it will replace it.
- Keep installers in a local folder on C:, not on the desktop if your desktop is synced to OneDrive.
- Install all pending Windows updates first, and leave the PC on mains power during the installation.
- Stick to one architecture (64-bit is the default) for Office, Visio and Project on the same PC.
- Keep a copy of the ODT download folder if you manage several PCs, so later installs do not depend on the network.
After it installs: activation
A successful installation is not the same as activation. Open Word, go to File > Account and check that it shows Product Activated. If you see a red "Unlicensed Product" bar instead, follow our Office unlicensed product fix. Leftover licences from a previous installation are the usual culprit there too.
Frequently asked questions
What does Office error 30088-4 mean?
It means the installer could not complete, typically because of an existing Office installation, antivirus or firewall interference, or proxy settings. Uninstalling all Office versions and restarting fixes most cases.
How do I fix error 30015-4 (5)?
The (5) means access denied. Run the installer as administrator from a folder on C:, and check that SYSTEM and Administrators have full control of C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Office.
Can I install Office 2024 alongside Microsoft 365?
Not as separate suites on one PC. Remove the Microsoft 365 apps (including preinstalled trials) before installing Office 2024.
Does reinstalling Office use up my licence?
No. Reinstalling on the same PC reuses the same licence. Retail licences reinstall from your Microsoft account, and volume keys reactivate on the same device.
Why does the installer get stuck at a percentage and then fail?
Usually the download was interrupted by a network drop, proxy or security software. Use the Office Deployment Tool to download first, then install offline.
