Microsoft no longer offers a Windows 8.1 download, and support ended on 10 January 2023. To install Windows 8.1 Pro today, use your original installation or recovery media, enter your 25-character key during setup, then activate online through Control Panel > System or with slmgr /ato. Where your hardware allows, Windows 11 Pro is the safer choice.
This guide explains how to install and activate the Windows 8.1 Pro lifetime licence we sell, and it is upfront about the limitations. Windows 8.1 is out of support, Microsoft has withdrawn its public download page, and most modern browsers and apps have stopped supporting it. It still has legitimate uses, such as running legacy business software, specialist hardware or an older PC that cannot run Windows 11, but you should go in with your eyes open.
The current situation with Windows 8.1
- Support has ended. According to Microsoft's Windows 8.1 lifecycle page, extended support ended on 10 January 2023. There are no more security updates, bug fixes or technical support.
- No official download. The Windows 8.1 page on Microsoft's software download site has been withdrawn, and Microsoft no longer provides a Windows 8.1 ISO to the public.
- No free upgrade. Microsoft has stopped accepting Windows 7 and 8.x keys to activate Windows 10 or Windows 11, so a Windows 8.1 key will not activate a newer version.
- App support is fading. Current versions of major browsers and Microsoft 365 apps no longer support Windows 8.1.
Please avoid ISO files from file-sharing sites, torrents or unofficial mirrors. They are not supported by Microsoft and can be modified to include malware, which is a serious risk on an operating system that no longer receives security patches.
Who still needs Windows 8.1 Pro?
Typical reasons to choose Windows 8.1 Pro today include businesses running line-of-business software that was never updated for Windows 10 or 11, workshops and labs with machinery or instruments whose control software only supports Windows 8.1, and people restoring an older PC that does not meet Windows 11's TPM 2.0 and processor requirements. In those situations, the Pro edition is worth having over standard Windows 8.1 because it adds features that matter to small offices and technical users:
| Windows 8.1 Pro feature | Why it is useful |
|---|---|
| BitLocker drive encryption | Protects data on the drive if the PC or disk is lost or stolen. |
| Remote Desktop host | Lets you connect to the PC from another computer on your network. |
| Domain join and Group Policy | Allows the PC to join a Windows Server domain and be centrally managed. |
| Client Hyper-V (64-bit) | Runs virtual machines, handy for testing or isolating legacy software. |
If your reason for choosing Windows 8.1 is simply familiarity with the interface, it is worth reading the alternative section later in this guide first, because Windows 11 offers a similar desktop experience with ongoing security updates and support for current apps and browsers.
What you need before you start
- Your 25-character Windows 8.1 Pro product key from the order email.
- Genuine Windows 8.1 installation media: an original DVD or USB, a recovery drive or recovery partition from your PC manufacturer, or a Microsoft-created ISO you downloaded before the page was withdrawn.
- A PC that meets the requirements below. Very recent hardware may lack Windows 8.1 drivers.
- An internet connection for online activation.
- A full backup, because a clean install erases the target drive.
| Component | Minimum requirement |
|---|---|
| Processor | 1 GHz or faster with support for PAE, NX and SSE2 |
| Memory (RAM) | 1 GB (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit) |
| Storage | 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit) |
| Graphics | Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver |
| 64-bit extras | Processor support for CMPXCHG16b, PrefetchW and LAHF/SAHF |
Step 1: Get genuine installation media
Because Microsoft no longer hosts the download, the safe options are:
- Use your original media. If you have a Windows 8.1 DVD or USB stick from a previous purchase, it can install Windows 8.1 Pro with your new key.
- Use manufacturer recovery media. Many PCs sold with Windows 8.1 include a recovery partition or a tool to create a recovery USB. Check your PC maker's support site for official recovery media for your model.
- Use a previously downloaded Microsoft ISO. An ISO you downloaded from microsoft.com while the page was live is still genuine. You can write it to an 8 GB USB drive with Rufus or the Windows USB/DVD Download Tool.
- Ask us. If none of these is available, email support@softkeyworld.com with your order number and our team will advise on official installation media for your purchase.
Note that Windows 8.1 media and Windows 8 media are different. A Windows 8.1 Pro key is designed for Windows 8.1 media; using original Windows 8 media can cause a product key does not match message.
Step 2: Install Windows 8.1 Pro
- Insert the DVD or USB drive and restart. Open the boot menu (often F12, F11, F9 or Esc) and choose the installation media. On UEFI PCs, select the UEFI entry for the drive.
- Choose your language, time format and keyboard, then select Install now.
- Enter your Windows 8.1 Pro product key when prompted. Windows 8.1 setup asks for the key at this point and uses it to select the Pro edition.
- Accept the licence terms and choose Custom: Install Windows only (advanced).
- Select the drive or partition for Windows. Delete old partitions only if you are sure the data is backed up.
- Wait while Windows installs and restarts. Then personalise the colour scheme, connect to a network and choose express or custom settings.
- Sign in with a local account or a Microsoft account. Windows 8.1 Pro allows either; choose Create a new account and then Sign in without a Microsoft account for a local one.
- Install drivers from your PC manufacturer, then run Windows Update to pull down the final updates Microsoft released before support ended.
Step 3: Activate Windows 8.1 Pro
If the PC was online during setup, Windows 8.1 may activate automatically. Otherwise:
- Press Windows + X and choose System, or open Control Panel > System and Security > System.
- Scroll to Windows activation. If it is not activated, select View details in Windows Activation or Change product key.
- Enter your 25-character key if asked and select Activate.
- Wait for the confirmation that Windows is activated.
Command-line alternative
Open Command Prompt as administrator (Windows + X, then Command Prompt (Admin)) and run:
- Install your key:
slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX - Activate online:
slmgr /ato
Offline or phone activation
If online activation fails, run slui 4, choose your country and note the installation ID shown. Microsoft has moved its phone activation service online, so in most regions the activation phone line now directs you to Microsoft's Product Activation portal, where you sign in, enter the installation ID and receive a confirmation ID to type back into the wizard. You will need access to a browser on another device for this step.
Verify activation
- Control Panel > System should say Windows is activated under Windows activation, with the edition shown as Windows 8.1 Pro.
- Run
slmgr /xprto confirm the machine is permanently activated. - Run
slmgr /dlvfor the licence channel, partial product key and status.
Troubleshooting common activation errors
| Error code / message | What it means | How to fix it |
|---|---|---|
| 0xC004F050 | The key is invalid or does not match the installed edition. | Check you installed Windows 8.1 Pro from Windows 8.1 media and retype the key carefully. |
| The product key you entered does not match any of the Windows images available | The installation media is for a different edition or version, such as Windows 8. | Use genuine Windows 8.1 media that includes the Pro edition. |
| 0xC004C003 | The activation server rejected the key. | Check for typing errors, then contact our support team with your order number. |
| 0xC004C008 | The key has already been used the maximum number of times. | Contact support@softkeyworld.com so we can check the key. |
| 0x8007007B / 0xC004F074 | Windows is trying to reach a KMS server, usually because volume media or a generic key was used. | Install your own key with slmgr /ipk, then run slmgr /ato. |
| 0x80072EE7 / 0x80072F8F | Windows cannot reach Microsoft's activation servers. | Check the internet connection and correct the date, time and time zone, then try again or use phone activation. |
A safer alternative: Windows 11 Pro
Running an unsupported operating system on a connected PC carries real risk, because new security holes found in Windows 8.1 will never be patched. If your PC has a compatible 64-bit processor, 4 GB of RAM, TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, a Windows 11 Pro licence gives you current security updates and full app support. Many PCs that appear incompatible only need a firmware setting changed, which our guide to the This PC can’t run Windows 11 error explains. Note that moving from Windows 8.1 to Windows 11 requires a clean install, so back up your files first.
If you do stay on Windows 8.1, reduce your risk: keep the PC behind a router firewall, avoid using it for online banking or email, use a supported browser if one is available for 8.1, and keep important files backed up offline.
Frequently asked questions
Can I still download Windows 8.1 from Microsoft?
No. Microsoft has withdrawn the Windows 8.1 download page, so there is no official public ISO any more. Use original media, manufacturer recovery media or an ISO you previously downloaded from Microsoft.
Does Windows 8.1 still activate?
Yes. Genuine Windows 8.1 keys can still be activated online or through Microsoft's Product Activation portal, even though the operating system no longer receives updates.
When did Windows 8.1 support end?
Extended support for Windows 8.1 ended on 10 January 2023. Microsoft no longer releases security updates for it.
Can I use my Windows 8.1 key to activate Windows 10 or 11?
No. Microsoft has ended the free upgrade path that allowed older keys to activate newer versions. Windows 10 or 11 needs its own licence.
Is Windows 8.1 safe to use in 2026?
It is risky for everyday internet use because it no longer receives security patches. It is better suited to offline or isolated use, such as legacy software or hardware.
Can I upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 11 without losing files?
Not in place. Windows 11 must be clean installed on a PC currently running Windows 8.1, so back up your files and reinstall your apps afterwards.
