Windows 7 Professional: Install & Activation Guide

Softkeyworld Team · 02 October 2026

Microsoft has removed the Windows 7 download page and ended support on 14 January 2020, so you need genuine existing media to install Windows 7 Professional. Boot from your original disc, USB or recovery media, enter your 25-character key, then activate online via Computer > Properties or slmgr /ato, or offline using slui 4 and Microsoft's activation portal.

This guide covers installing and activating the Windows 7 Professional licence we sell, and it is deliberately honest about where Windows 7 stands today. It is a long-retired operating system. It still has a place for legacy software, industrial and laboratory equipment, and offline machines, but it is not a sensible choice for a PC you use for everyday web browsing, email or banking.

Windows 7 in 2026: what you should know first

  • Support ended on 14 January 2020. Microsoft's Windows 7 lifecycle page confirms there are no further security updates, fixes or technical support for consumers. The paid Extended Security Update programme for businesses has also finished.
  • The download page has been removed. Microsoft's software download site no longer offers Windows 7 media of any kind, and there is no official ISO available to the public.
  • No free upgrade to Windows 10 or 11. Microsoft no longer accepts Windows 7 keys to activate newer versions of Windows.
  • Modern software has moved on. Current browsers, Microsoft 365 apps and many security products no longer run on or support Windows 7.
  • Activation still works. Genuine Windows 7 keys can still be activated, either online or through Microsoft's Product Activation portal.

Never download Windows 7 ISOs from torrent sites, file-sharing services or unofficial mirrors. Modified images are a common way to spread malware, and on a system with no security updates the consequences can be severe.

What you need before you start

  • Your 25-character Windows 7 Professional product key from your order email.
  • Genuine Windows 7 Professional installation media: an original DVD or USB, a manufacturer recovery disc or partition, or an ISO you previously downloaded from Microsoft. Media with Service Pack 1 (SP1) built in saves time.
  • A PC that meets the requirements below, ideally one built for Windows 7 era hardware.
  • Chipset, storage, network and graphics drivers for your PC, saved to a USB drive in advance.
  • A full backup of any files on the target drive.
Component Minimum requirement
Processor 1 GHz or faster, 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64)
Memory (RAM) 1 GB (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
Storage 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit) free space
Graphics DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
Firmware Legacy BIOS or UEFI with Compatibility Support Module (CSM); Secure Boot must be off

Windows 7 was never designed for current hardware. Recent Intel and AMD platforms are not officially supported, the installer has no built-in USB 3.x or NVMe drivers, and Windows 7 does not support Secure Boot. Installing on a machine from the last several years can be difficult or impossible without extra drivers.

32-bit or 64-bit?

Your Windows 7 Professional key works with either the 32-bit or 64-bit version, so choose the media that suits the machine and the software you need to run. The 64-bit version can use more than 4 GB of RAM and is the right choice for most PCs with 4 GB or more. The 32-bit version is mainly useful for very old processors, or for legacy 16-bit applications and older device drivers that have no 64-bit equivalent, which is often the reason Windows 7 is being installed in the first place. If you are unsure, check the requirements of the legacy software or hardware first, because switching later means a full reinstall. Write down which version you install, as you will need matching drivers from your PC or device manufacturer.

Step 1: Get genuine installation media

  1. Original disc or USB. If you have a Windows 7 Professional DVD or USB from Microsoft or a PC maker, you can use it with your new key.
  2. Manufacturer recovery media. Business PCs originally sold with Windows 7 often have recovery discs or a recovery partition. Check your manufacturer's support site for your model.
  3. An earlier Microsoft ISO. An ISO downloaded from microsoft.com before the page was removed is still genuine. Write it to a USB drive (4 GB or larger) with Rufus or the Windows USB/DVD Download Tool, using the MBR partition scheme for legacy BIOS PCs.
  4. Ask us. If you have no media, email support@softkeyworld.com with your order number and our team will advise on official installation media for your order.

Step 2: Install Windows 7 Professional

  1. In the PC's firmware settings, disable Secure Boot and enable Legacy or CSM boot if your PC has these options.
  2. Insert the media, restart and choose it from the boot menu (often F12, F11, F9 or Esc). Press a key when asked to boot from CD or DVD.
  3. Choose language, time and keyboard settings, then select Install now.
  4. Accept the licence terms and choose Custom (advanced) for a clean install.
  5. Select the target drive. If no drives appear, choose Load driver and point to your storage driver on a USB stick.
  6. Wait for Windows to copy files and restart. Then create a user name and password.
  7. Enter your Windows 7 Professional product key when prompted. You can leave Automatically activate Windows when I'm online ticked.
  8. Set the time zone and network type, then install your chipset, network and graphics drivers.
  9. If your media did not include SP1, install Service Pack 1 and the final cumulative update from the Microsoft Update Catalog. Windows Update on Windows 7 needs the SHA-2 code-signing support updates installed first to accept later updates.

Step 3: Activate Windows 7 Professional

Online activation

  1. Click Start, right-click Computer and choose Properties.
  2. At the bottom, under Windows activation, select Activate Windows now (or Change product key if you need to enter or replace the key).
  3. Choose Activate Windows online now, enter your key if asked and select Next.
  4. Wait for the Activation was successful message.

Command-line alternative

Open Start, type cmd, right-click it and choose Run as administrator, then run:

  1. Install your key: slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
  2. Activate online: slmgr /ato

Phone and offline activation

If online activation fails or the PC is kept offline, run slui 4, select your country and write down the installation ID. Microsoft has moved its telephone activation service online: in most regions the activation phone number now plays a message directing you to Microsoft's Product Activation portal. On another internet-connected device, follow Microsoft's guide to activating perpetual products using the Product Activation portal, sign in with any Microsoft account (it is used for secure access and is not linked to your licence), enter the installation ID and copy the confirmation ID back into the Windows 7 activation wizard. Old confirmation IDs from previous installations cannot be reused.

Verify activation

  • Start > right-click Computer > Properties should show Windows is activated and the edition Windows 7 Professional.
  • Run slmgr /xpr to confirm the machine is permanently activated.
  • Run slmgr /dlv to view the licence channel, partial product key and licence status.

Security caveats and a better alternative

If you do run Windows 7, reduce the risk. Keep the PC offline or on an isolated network wherever possible, do not use it for banking, shopping or personal email, disable Remote Desktop and file sharing you do not need, and keep regular offline backups. Treat any USB drives that have been used on other computers with caution.

For anything other than legacy or offline use, a modern, supported version of Windows is the better choice. If your PC has TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and a compatible processor, our Windows 11 Pro licence gives you current security updates, and our Windows 11 Pro installation guide walks you through the clean install from Windows 7.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still download Windows 7 from Microsoft?

No. Microsoft has removed the Windows 7 software download page and no longer provides official ISOs to the public. Use original media, manufacturer recovery media or an ISO you previously downloaded from Microsoft.

Can Windows 7 still be activated?

Yes. Genuine Windows 7 Professional keys can still be activated online, or offline through Microsoft's Product Activation portal using the installation ID from slui 4.

Does Windows 7 phone activation still work?

Microsoft has moved phone activation online. Calling the activation number now generally directs you to the Product Activation portal, where you enter your installation ID to receive a confirmation ID.

Is it safe to use Windows 7 in 2026?

Not for general internet use. It has received no security updates since January 2020, so it is best kept offline or isolated for legacy software and hardware.

Can I use my Windows 7 key to activate Windows 10 or Windows 11?

No. Microsoft has ended the free upgrade route, so Windows 7 keys no longer activate newer versions of Windows.

Can I install Windows 7 on a new PC?

Often not easily. Modern PCs lack Windows 7 drivers, require Secure Boot to be disabled and may not support legacy boot at all. Windows 7 is best suited to hardware from its own era.
