The Windows 11 shortcuts that save the most time are Win + Z (snap layouts), Win + V (clipboard history), Win + Shift + S (screenshot a region), Win + Ctrl + D (new virtual desktop), Win + H (voice typing), Win + . (emoji and symbols), Win + X (power-user menu) and Ctrl + Shift + Esc (Task Manager). All 25 below work on Windows 11 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2.

Most people use Windows 11 with a mouse for things the keyboard does in under a second. Each saving is small, but when you snap windows, grab screenshots and paste the same text dozens of times a day, it adds up quickly. We have picked the 25 shortcuts we actually use when setting up and supporting customers' PCs, grouped by job, with notes on the details that most lists leave out. Everything here is built into Windows 11; no extra software is needed.
A quick note on versions: Windows 11 version 26H2 began rolling out at the end of September 2026 as a small enablement package that shares its platform and features with 25H2, so none of these shortcuts changed with it. Microsoft keeps an official master list of keyboard shortcuts in Windows if you want the full reference.
Key takeaways
- Learn three first: Win + Z, Win + V and Win + Shift + S. They cover most daily wasted clicks.
- Clipboard history must be switched on once before Win + V remembers anything.
- Virtual desktops (Win + Ctrl + D) are the easiest way to separate work and personal windows.
- If the Windows key does nothing at all, check for a keyboard Win Lock or gaming mode before anything else.
Window management and snapping (1–6)
Snapping is where Windows 11 is genuinely better than Windows 10, and where the keyboard beats dragging windows to screen edges.
| # | Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Win + Z | Opens snap layouts for the active window |
| 2 | Win + Left / Right / Up / Down | Snap to a half, maximise, or restore/minimise |
| 3 | Win + Shift + Left / Right | Moves the window to the next monitor |
| 4 | Win + D | Shows the desktop; press again to bring windows back |
| 5 | Alt + Tab | Switches between open windows |
| 6 | Win + Tab | Opens Task View with all windows and desktops |
Getting the most from Win + Z
When the layout grid appears, each zone is numbered. Press the layout's number, then the zone's number, and the window snaps there without touching the mouse. Windows then offers to fill the remaining zones with your other open windows. Snapped windows are remembered as a group, so hovering over one in the taskbar lets you restore the whole set. If nothing happens, check that Settings > System > Multitasking > Snap windows is switched on.
Quarter-screen snapping
Combine the arrow shortcuts: Win + Left snaps a window to the left half, then Win + Up moves it to the top-left quarter. This is the quickest way to tile four windows on a large monitor.
Virtual desktops (7–9)
Virtual desktops let you keep separate sets of windows, for example one for email and chat, one for a project, and one for personal browsing, and switch between them instantly.
| # | Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | Win + Ctrl + D | Creates a new virtual desktop and switches to it |
| 8 | Win + Ctrl + Left / Right | Moves between desktops |
| 9 | Win + Ctrl + F4 | Closes the current desktop (its windows move to the neighbouring one) |
In Task View (Win + Tab) you can right-click a desktop to rename it or choose a different wallpaper for each, which makes it obvious at a glance which one you are on. Closing a desktop never closes your apps, so it is safe to tidy up.
Text, clipboard and screenshots (10–14)
| # | Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | Win + V | Opens clipboard history |
| 11 | Win + Shift + S | Snipping Tool capture: rectangle, freeform, window or full screen |
| 12 | Win + PrtScn | Saves a full-screen screenshot to Pictures\Screenshots |
| 13 | Win + . (full stop) | Emoji, GIF, kaomoji and symbol panel |
| 14 | Win + H | Voice typing into any text box |
Win + V: switch it on first
The first time you press Win + V, Windows asks you to turn clipboard history on (or do it in Settings > System > Clipboard). After that it keeps your recent copied text and images, and you can pin items you paste often, such as an address or a standard email reply, so they survive restarts. Clipboard history is cleared on restart apart from pinned items. Avoid leaving passwords pinned there.
Win + Shift + S vs the Print Screen key
On recent Windows 11 builds, the Print Screen key on its own also opens the Snipping Tool by default; you can change this under Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard. Win + Shift + S always works regardless, and the capture is copied to the clipboard, so you can paste it straight into an email or chat. Win + PrtScn is the one to use when you want a saved file without any clicks; the screen dims briefly to confirm.
Win + . is more than emoji
The same panel has a symbols tab with currency signs (£, €), maths symbols, accented letters and arrows. It is far quicker than hunting for Alt codes when you need a "×" or "é". Win + ; (semicolon) opens the same panel.
Win + H voice typing
Click into any text field, press Win + H and start talking. Say "full stop" or "comma" for punctuation, or enable automatic punctuation from the settings cog on the voice typing bar. It works in Word, Outlook, browsers and most other apps, and is useful for drafting long emails.
System and quick access (15–22)
| # | Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 15 | Win + A | Quick Settings: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, volume, brightness, focus |
| 16 | Win + N | Notification centre and calendar |
| 17 | Win + X | Quick Link (power-user) menu |
| 18 | Ctrl + Shift + Esc | Opens Task Manager directly |
| 19 | Win + I | Opens Settings |
| 20 | Win + E | Opens File Explorer |
| 21 | Win + R | Run box for commands such as cmd, devmgmt.msc or %temp%
|
| 22 | Win + L | Locks the PC instantly |
Win + X is a technician's best friend
The Quick Link menu gives you Device Manager, Disk Management, Event Viewer, Terminal, Terminal (Admin), Network Connections and more. Each item has an underlined letter, so you can chain keys: Win + X, then A opens Terminal as administrator, which is what we use when running commands like sfc /scannow or checking activation with slmgr /xpr.
Ctrl + Shift + Esc vs Ctrl + Alt + Delete
Ctrl + Alt + Delete shows a full-screen menu first; Ctrl + Shift + Esc goes straight to Task Manager. When an app freezes, that one step matters. In Task Manager, start typing a process name in the search box at the top to find it quickly.
Win + L habit
Locking your PC every time you step away is one of the simplest security habits there is, and in many offices it is a policy requirement. Win + L makes it effortless.
Apps and display (23–25)
| # | Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 23 | Win + 1 to 9 | Opens or switches to the app pinned in that taskbar position |
| 24 | Win + P | Projection mode: PC screen only, duplicate, extend, second screen only |
| 25 | Win + Ctrl + Shift + B | Restarts the graphics driver (screen flashes, apps stay open) |
Win + number becomes powerful once you arrange your taskbar deliberately: pin your browser first, Outlook second, and so on. Add Shift (Win + Shift + 1) to open a new instance of that app. Win + P is the shortcut to remember before a presentation, and Win + Ctrl + Shift + B is the first thing to try when the screen goes black or freezes after waking from sleep, before you reach for the power button.
What about the Copilot key and Win + C?
The history here is a little tangled, which is why we have left it out of the 25. Microsoft retired Win + C as the Copilot shortcut in mid-2024 when Copilot became a normal app, then brought it back through updates in 2025 (tap to open Copilot, press and hold for voice). Newer laptops also have a dedicated Copilot key. On Windows 11 24H2 and later you can choose what that key launches under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard > Customize Copilot key on keyboard, as Microsoft explains in its Copilot key guide. Behaviour can differ on work-managed PCs, where administrators control Copilot.
Three shortcut workflows we use every day
Reporting a problem in under ten seconds
Press Win + Shift + S, drag around the error message, switch to your email with Alt + Tab, and paste with Ctrl + V. Anyone helping you, including our support team, can usually diagnose an activation or update error far faster from a screenshot than from a description.
Comparing two documents side by side
Open both files, press Win + Left on the first and pick the second from the thumbnails Windows offers on the right. On a second monitor, Win + Shift + Right sends a window across, and Win + Up maximises it there.
Separating focus work from distractions
Create a second desktop with Win + Ctrl + D for the task at hand, leaving email and chat on the first. Win + Ctrl + Left lets you check messages and Win + Ctrl + Right takes you back, without minimising anything.
When shortcuts stop working
- No Windows-key shortcut works: many gaming keyboards have a Win Lock key or "game mode" that disables it. Our guide to fixing the Windows key when it is not working covers this and other causes.
- One shortcut does something else: apps such as screen recorders, chat tools and graphics utilities sometimes claim shortcuts globally. Close them one at a time to find the culprit.
- Snap shortcuts do nothing: check Settings > System > Multitasking.
- Laptop function row: if PrtScn or F-keys trigger brightness or volume, press Fn with them or toggle Fn Lock.
- Shortcuts blocked on a work PC: Group Policy can disable some Windows-key shortcuts; ask your IT team.
Frequently asked questions
What is the shortcut for snap layouts in Windows 11?
Win + Z. Press the number of the layout, then the number of the zone to place the active window without using the mouse.
How do I see my clipboard history?
Press Win + V. If it is the first time, click "Turn on" or enable it in Settings > System > Clipboard.
How do I take a screenshot of part of the screen?
Press Win + Shift + S, choose rectangle, freeform, window or full screen, and the capture is copied to your clipboard and offered in the Snipping Tool for editing.
What does Win + N do in Windows 11?
It opens the notification centre together with the calendar flyout. Win + A opens Quick Settings separately.
Did Windows 11 26H2 change any keyboard shortcuts?
No. 26H2 is an enablement package that keeps feature parity with 25H2, so the shortcuts are the same as on 24H2 and 25H2 PCs.
Do these shortcuts work on Windows 11 Home and Pro?
Yes. Every shortcut in this list works identically on Home, Pro and Enterprise. The editions differ in features such as BitLocker and Remote Desktop hosting, not in shortcuts.
Our recommendation
Do not try to memorise all 25 at once. Pick three this week, perhaps Win + Z, Win + V and Win + Shift + S, and add another group once they are automatic. If you use your PC for work, Windows 11 Pro adds the tools that matter beyond shortcuts: BitLocker drive encryption, Remote Desktop hosting, Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox. Our comparison of Windows 11's pros and cons helps you decide, and if you are already on Home, a Home to Pro upgrade key switches editions without a reinstall. For a new or rebuilt PC, a full Windows 11 Pro licence key is delivered by email straight after purchase.
