Visual Studio 2022: Download, Install & Activation Guide

Softkeyworld Team · 02 October 2026

To download, install and activate Visual Studio 2022 Professional or Enterprise, run Microsoft's official Visual Studio 2022 bootstrapper for your edition, pick your workloads in the Visual Studio Installer, then open Visual Studio and go to File > Account Settings > License with a Product Key (or Help > Register Visual Studio) and enter your 25-character key.

Visual Studio 2022 (version 17.x) is Microsoft's 64-bit IDE for .NET, C++, web, cloud and desktop development. Microsoft released Visual Studio 2026 in November 2025, but Visual Studio 2022 remains fully supported, and many teams deliberately stay on it for toolchain stability and compatibility with existing solutions. The final minor version, 17.14, continues to receive fixes until January 2032. This guide shows how to get the official installer, choose the right workloads and unlock Professional or Enterprise with a product key. If you need a licence, you can buy a genuine Visual Studio 2022 product key and receive it by email instantly after payment.

What you need before you start

  • Your Visual Studio 2022 Professional or Enterprise product key. The key unlocks only the edition it was issued for, so install the matching edition.
  • A 64-bit PC running a supported version of Windows (see the table below).
  • Administrator rights to install and update Visual Studio.
  • A stable internet connection for the installer, or a pre-built offline layout for air-gapped machines.
  • Enough free space for your chosen workloads: a typical .NET or C++ setup uses 20 to 50 GB, ideally on an SSD.
Requirement Visual Studio 2022
Operating system 64-bit Windows 11 (Home, Pro, Pro Education, Pro for Workstations, Enterprise, Education); Windows Server 2025, 2022, 2019 or 2016 (Standard and Datacenter)
Processor x64 or ARM64; quad-core or better recommended
Memory 4 GB minimum; 16 GB recommended for professional solutions
Disk space 850 MB to 210 GB depending on workloads; 20 to 50 GB typical
Display 1366 x 768 minimum; 1920 x 1080 or higher recommended
Software .NET Framework 4.7.2 to install and 4.8 to run; WebView2 Runtime (installed automatically)
Not supported 32-bit or ARM32 Windows, Windows 11 in S mode, Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC, IoT editions

Windows 10 reached end of support in October 2025, and Microsoft's current Visual Studio 2022 system requirements now focus on Windows 11 and Windows Server. If your development machine is still on Windows 10, upgrading first is the safest route; our Windows 11 Pro installation guide walks you through it. On ARM64 PCs, a few workloads such as Python, Office/SharePoint and mobile development with C++ are not available.

Professional or Enterprise: which key do you have?

Both editions share the same installer technology and project system. Professional covers everyday professional development for small teams. Enterprise adds advanced testing, IntelliTrace, Live Unit Testing, Code Map and architecture tools, and code coverage. Check your order email for the edition before downloading, because a Professional key will not unlock Enterprise and vice versa. If you accidentally install the wrong edition, you do not need to reinstall Windows or remove your projects: open the Visual Studio Installer, uninstall that edition, run the correct bootstrapper and enter your key again. Your settings, extensions list and source code folders are unaffected.

Step 1: Download Visual Studio 2022

  1. Download the official Visual Studio 2022 bootstrapper for your edition. Microsoft keeps fixed links that always fetch the latest 17.x release: https://aka.ms/vs/17/release/vs_professional.exe for Professional and https://aka.ms/vs/17/release/vs_enterprise.exe for Enterprise. They are listed on Microsoft's Visual Studio 2022 release history page, and we include the correct link in your order email.
  2. Do not use the main Download Visual Studio button on visualstudio.microsoft.com for this licence; it now installs Visual Studio 2026, which a Visual Studio 2022 key does not unlock.
  3. Save the small vs_professional.exe or vs_enterprise.exe file (a few megabytes). It downloads the rest of Visual Studio during installation.
  4. Optional, for offline or multiple PCs: from a Command Prompt, run vs_professional.exe --layout C:\VSLayout --add Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.ManagedDesktop --lang en-US to build a local layout you can copy to other machines.

Only download Visual Studio from Microsoft domains. If you cannot find the right installer, email support@softkeyworld.com or see our download and activation page.

Step 2: Install Visual Studio 2022

  1. Right-click the bootstrapper and select Run as administrator. Accept the Microsoft Privacy Statement and licence terms when prompted.
  2. The Visual Studio Installer updates itself, then opens the Workloads tab.
  3. Tick the workloads you need, for example ASP.NET and web development, .NET desktop development, Desktop development with C++ or Data storage and processing (which includes SQL Server Data Tools).
  4. Use the Individual components tab for extras such as specific .NET SDKs, Git for Windows or older MSVC toolsets, and the Language packs tab to add interface languages.
  5. Under Installation locations, move the IDE, download cache and shared components to a different drive if your system drive is small.
  6. Choose Install while downloading (faster) or Download all, then install, and click Install.
  7. When installation completes, click Launch. Restart Windows if the installer asks, then choose your development settings and colour theme on first start.

Step 3: Activate Visual Studio 2022 with your product key

Visual Studio Professional and Enterprise start in trial mode until you sign in with a subscription or enter a product key. Entering your key unlocks the IDE permanently on that machine without needing to sign in.

Method A: Account Settings

  1. Open Visual Studio 2022. If the sign-in screen appears, you can choose Skip this for now if you only want to use a product key.
  2. Go to File > Account Settings.
  3. Under All Accounts, find the licence information and select License with a Product Key.
  4. Type your 25-character Visual Studio 2022 product key in the Enter a product key dialog and click Apply.
  5. The licence status should change to show that the product is licensed with a product key.

Method B: Help menu or expired trial

  1. Select Help > Register Visual Studio. This opens the same licensing panel used in Method A.
  2. If your trial has already expired, Visual Studio shows a licensing dialog on start-up. Select Unlock with a Product Key.
  3. Enter your key and click Apply, then restart Visual Studio.

Microsoft documents both routes in its guide to unlocking Visual Studio with a product key. Product key activation is also the recommended method for PCs with limited or no internet access, because sign-in licences can go stale if the machine stays offline for a long time.

How to verify activation

  • Open File > Account Settings. The licence section should state that Visual Studio is licensed with a product key and show no expiry date.
  • Open Help > About Microsoft Visual Studio to confirm the edition (Professional 2022 or Enterprise 2022) and the version number beginning 17..
  • Open the Visual Studio Installer and check that the installed product card names the same edition.

Keeping Visual Studio 2022 up to date

Visual Studio 2022 updates itself through the Visual Studio Installer, and your product key stays valid across every 17.x update. A few points help you stay on a supported build:

  • Select Help > Check for Updates, or open the Visual Studio Installer and click Update on the product card, at least once a month to receive security fixes.
  • Version 17.14 is the final minor release of Visual Studio 2022 and the only one still serviced. The earlier Long-Term Servicing Channel baselines (17.8, 17.10 and 17.12) have all reached the end of their support windows, so move any machines pinned to them up to 17.14.
  • To add or remove workloads later, open the Visual Studio Installer, click Modify, adjust your selections and click Modify again. No re-activation is needed.
  • If you build an offline layout, refresh it periodically by re-running the same --layout command so new installs start on the latest build.
  • When you move to a new PC, install Visual Studio 2022 there and enter your key again, after removing the installation from the old machine in line with your licence terms.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I enter my Visual Studio 2022 product key?

In Visual Studio itself, under File > Account Settings > License with a Product Key, or Help > Register Visual Studio. The installer never asks for a key.

Does a Visual Studio 2022 key work in Visual Studio 2026?

No. Product keys are version-specific. A Visual Studio 2022 key unlocks Visual Studio 2022 (17.x) only, so install it from the 17.x bootstrapper links.

How long is Visual Studio 2022 supported?

Mainstream support ends on 13 January 2027 and extended support on 14 January 2032. Version 17.14 is the release that keeps receiving fixes through that extended period.

Do I need to sign in with a Microsoft account?

No. Signing in is optional when you use a product key, although it lets you sync settings and use GitHub Copilot and Azure features.

Can I install Visual Studio 2022 and 2026 side by side?

Yes. They install into separate folders and are managed by the same Visual Studio Installer, so you can keep 2022 for existing projects while trying 2026.

Can I use Visual Studio 2022 offline?

Yes. Build an offline layout with the --layout command, install from it, and activate with your product key. No internet connection is needed to keep the licence valid.
