Project Professional 2016: Download, Install & Activation Guide

Project Professional 2016 is still a capable desktop scheduling tool. It handles Gantt charts, resource levelling, team planning and timesheets on any Windows PC. Before you buy or install it, though, you should know that Microsoft ended support for Project 2016 on 14 October 2025. It still installs, activates and runs, but it no longer gets security updates, bug fixes or technical support from Microsoft. This guide covers the full process for retail and volume keys and is clear about where the official download now comes from.

What you need before you start

• Your Project Professional 2016 key from the Softkeyworld order email (Project 2016 Professional key or Project 2016 Professional listing)
• The official Microsoft download link sent with your order
• A Windows PC with administrator rights and an internet connection for activation
• About 3 GB of free disk space
• To know whether any Office already on the PC is 32-bit or 64-bit, and whether it is Click-to-Run or MSI (see the compatibility note below)

Important: Office compatibility

Project 2016 comes in two installation technologies: Click-to-Run (retail) and Windows Installer, or MSI (volume). Microsoft does not let you install two version-16.0 products that use different technologies on one PC. For example, you cannot install MSI Project 2016 on a PC that has Click-to-Run Office 2019, Office 2021 or Microsoft 365. Retail or volume: which Project 2016 key do you have?

Your order email states which type you received. Make sure the installer you use matches it, because a volume key will not activate a retail installation and the other way round.

Remove conflicting versions first

Before installing, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and look for other Project versions, such as a Project 2019 trial or the Project Online desktop client. Only one Project version can be installed at a time, so uninstall any you find and restart. If an uninstall fails or leaves traces behind, Microsoft's Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA) can remove Click-to-Run Office products cleanly. Leftover licences can also be cleared later with ospp.vbs /unpkey.

Step 1: Download Project Professional 2016

Microsoft no longer sells or promotes Project 2016 on its consumer download pages, so the download route depends on your key.

1. Check your order email. Every Softkeyworld order for Project 2016 includes an official Microsoft-hosted download link that matches your key type. This is the simplest and safest route.
2. Retail keys already linked to a Microsoft account: sign in at account.microsoft.com/services. If Project Professional 2016 is listed, click Install. You can also try redeeming a retail key at setup.office.com, but Microsoft may redirect older products to newer offers.
3. Choose the language and the same bitness (32-bit or 64-bit) as any Office already on the PC.
4. Save the installer, or the .img disc image if you received one, to your Downloads folder.
5. Never download Project 2016 from file-sharing sites or "free ISO" mirrors. Those files are often modified and can carry malware. If your link is missing or expired, email support@softkeyworld.com with your order number and we will resend it.

Step 2: Install Project Professional 2016

1. Close all Office applications.
2. If you downloaded an .img or .iso file, right-click it and choose Mount. Windows opens it as a virtual drive.
3. Double-click setup.exe (or the downloaded Click-to-Run setup file) and accept the User Account Control prompt.
4. For MSI (volume) media: enter your product key when asked, accept the licence terms and choose Install Now. Choose Customise only if you need a different install location.
5. For Click-to-Run (retail) installers: setup streams Project from Microsoft and shows "You're all set" when it finishes.
6. Open Project Professional 2016 from the Start menu.

Step 3: Activate Project Professional 2016

Activate through the Project interface

1. Open Project and go to File > Account.
2. Click Change Product Key (or Activate Product) and enter your 25-character key.
3. Choose I want to activate the software over the Internet and follow the prompts.

Activate from the command line

1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
2. Go to the Office folder: cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16". For 32-bit Project on 64-bit Windows, use cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16".
3. Install the key: cscript ospp.vbs /inpkey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
4. Activate: cscript ospp.vbs /act

Activate by telephone

If online activation returns an error, open Project, go to File > Account > Activate Product, and choose the telephone option. You give the installation ID and get back a confirmation ID. Verify activation

• In Project, open File > Account. Product Information should say Product Activated – Microsoft Project Professional 2016.
• From the Office16 folder, run cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus. The Project entry should show LICENSE STATUS: ---LICENSED--- and the last five characters of your key.
• If /dstatus lists a grace or notification state, run /act again or use telephone activation.

Install the final Project 2016 updates

Updates released before support ended are still available, and they include important security fixes. For Click-to-Run installs, open Project and go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now. For MSI installs, open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options, turn on Receive updates for other Microsoft products, then check for updates and install everything offered for Project 2016.

Reinstalling or moving Project 2016 to a new PC

Keep your order email and key somewhere safe, because you will need both to reinstall. To move Project to a new computer, uninstall it from the old one first, then repeat the download, install and activation steps on the new PC. Online activation may refuse the key if it was recently used on another device. In that case, telephone activation usually completes the transfer. Using Project 2016 safely after end of support

Project 2016 will keep opening, editing and saving your .mpp files. Because Microsoft no longer patches it, follow a few sensible precautions:

• Install every final Project 2016 update that Windows Update or Microsoft Update offers. These include fixes released before the cut-off date.
• Keep Windows 10 or 11 itself fully updated, and use an up-to-date antivirus.
• Be careful with project files from unknown senders, and leave Protected View switched on.
• Don't rely on Project 2016 for new integrations with cloud services. Connections to Project Online or newer Project Server builds may not work as Microsoft updates those services.
• Plan to upgrade to a supported version for long-running or business-critical projects.

For a stand-alone planner on one PC working with local files, Project 2016 remains a practical, cost-effective choice.

Troubleshooting common errors

Frequently asked questions

Is Project 2016 still supported?

No. Microsoft's Project 2016 and 2019 end-of-support announcement confirms support ended on 14 October 2025. The software keeps working, but it no longer receives security updates or Microsoft technical support.

Can I still download Project 2016 from Microsoft?

Not from the public consumer download pages. Retail licences already linked to an account may still show at account.microsoft.com/services. Otherwise, use the official link sent with your Softkeyworld order.

Does Project 2016 work on Windows 11?

Yes. It installs and runs on Windows 10 and 11, provided it does not conflict with other Office products on the PC.

Can I install Project 2016 alongside Microsoft 365?

Only the Click-to-Run version of Project 2016 can sit alongside Microsoft 365. MSI (volume) Project 2016 cannot share a PC with Click-to-Run Office.

What is the difference between Project 2016 Professional and Standard?

Professional adds team collaboration features, resource management, Skype for Business integration and the ability to connect to Project Server and Project Online. Standard is for a single user planning on their own.

Should I choose a newer version instead?
