To download, install and activate SQL Server 2019 Standard, obtain the official ISO (your order link, Volume Licensing or the Microsoft Evaluation Center), run setup.exe as administrator, choose New SQL Server standalone installation and enter your Standard key on the Product Key page. To convert an existing Evaluation or Developer instance, use Maintenance > Edition Upgrade.
SQL Server 2019 (version 15.x) was released in November 2019 and is still running thousands of accounting, ERP, point-of-sale and practice-management systems. Many software vendors continue to certify their products specifically against 2019, which is the main reason businesses still buy it today. Before you install, be aware that SQL Server 2019 left mainstream support on 1 March 2025. It is now in extended support until 9 January 2030, which means Microsoft still publishes security fixes but no longer ships new cumulative updates or features. This guide explains the full process for the Standard edition, and you can buy a genuine SQL Server 2019 Standard key for instant email delivery if you need one.
What you need before you start
- Your SQL Server 2019 Standard product key from your order email.
- A 64-bit server running Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022 or 2025. Windows 10 and Windows 11 are supported for development or small test setups.
- Administrator rights and a plan for the service accounts SQL Server will run under.
- .NET Framework 4.6.2 or later, which is already included in Windows Server 2016 and newer.
- At least 6 GB of free disk space for Setup, and about 8 GB if you install every feature.
- Confirmation from your application vendor that SQL Server 2019 is the version they require.
| Requirement | SQL Server 2019 Standard |

SQL Server 2019 installs comfortably on modern hosts including Windows Server 2025, so you do not need an old operating system to run it. If you are building a fresh server for it, our Windows Server 2019 Standard guide covers the OS side. Microsoft's SQL Server 2019 requirements page lists every feature-specific requirement.
What SQL Server 2019 Standard includes
SQL Server 2019 brought Intelligent Query Processing, Accelerated Database Recovery (much faster rollback and crash recovery), UTF-8 collation support, the Java language extension, Machine Learning Services for R and Python, and PolyBase data virtualisation for reading Oracle, Teradata and MongoDB data without moving it. Big Data Clusters were retired by Microsoft in February 2025, so do not plan new work around that feature.
Step 1: Download SQL Server 2019 Standard
- Open the download link in your order email. Volume Licensing customers can also download the Standard ISO with the key embedded from the Volume Licensing portal.
- Alternatively, go to the SQL Server 2019 Evaluation Center, which still offers the 64-bit ISO and CAB downloads. The Evaluation edition runs for 180 days and converts to Standard with your key.
- Save the ISO to the server, right-click it and choose Mount. On Server Core, copy the ISO contents to a local folder.
- Download SQL Server Management Studio separately (the current SSMS 22 manages SQL Server 2019 without issues).
- Download the latest SQL Server 2019 cumulative update and any newer security update from Microsoft now, so you can patch straight after installation.
Never use repackaged ISOs from unofficial sites. If your link no longer works, email support@softkeyworld.com and we will send the official one again; our download and activation page explains our delivery process.
Step 2: Install SQL Server 2019 Standard
- Right-click
setup.exeon the mounted drive and select Run as administrator. - In the Installation Center choose Installation > New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation.
- On the Product Key page select Enter the product key, type your SQL Server 2019 Standard key and click Next. Volume Licensing media shows the key already filled in.
- Accept the licence terms, allow the Microsoft Update check, and let Install Rules run. Resolve any failures and click Re-run.
- On Feature Selection, tick Database Engine Services. Only add Machine Learning Services, PolyBase or Full-Text Search if your software asks for them, as each adds disk and memory overhead.
- On Instance Configuration, use the Default instance unless your vendor specifies a named instance (many accounting packages expect an instance named after the product).
- On Server Configuration, keep the default service accounts or enter domain accounts, and set SQL Server Agent to Automatic for scheduled backups. On the Collation tab, keep the default unless your vendor specifies one.
- On Database Engine Configuration, choose the authentication mode, click Add Current User, and set data, log, tempdb and backup paths. SQL Server 2019 Setup lets you configure tempdb files and the MaxDOP and Memory settings directly on this page.
- Click Install. When all features show Succeeded, click Close and restart if prompted.
- Install the latest cumulative update and security update you downloaded in Step 1.
Step 3: Activate SQL Server 2019 Standard
SQL Server has no online or phone activation. The key you enter determines the edition, so if you typed your Standard key in Step 2 the product is fully licensed already. If you installed the Evaluation or Developer edition, upgrade the edition with your key.
Edition Upgrade is also the cleanest route when a vendor or IT contractor has already set up SQL Server 2019 Evaluation on your server and configured the application databases. Rather than reinstalling, you simply apply your Standard key to the existing instance, and every database, login and job stays exactly where it is. Do this well before the 180-day trial ends, because an expired Evaluation instance will not start until it is upgraded.
Method A: Edition Upgrade
- Run
setup.exefrom your SQL Server 2019 media as administrator. - Click Maintenance > Edition Upgrade.
- On Product Key, enter your SQL Server 2019 Standard key and click Next.
- Accept the licence terms and choose the instance to upgrade.
- After Edition Upgrade Rules pass, click Upgrade. The SQL Server services restart, so warn users first.
- Click Close, then restart the server if Setup recommends it.
Method B: Command line
From an elevated Command Prompt in the setup folder:
setup.exe /q /ACTION=EditionUpgrade /INSTANCENAME=MSSQLSERVER /PID=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS
Swap MSSQLSERVER for your instance name if you used a named instance. Edition Upgrade cannot move Enterprise down to Standard; that requires reinstalling.
How to verify activation
In SSMS, open a new query window and run:
SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('Edition') AS Edition, SERVERPROPERTY('ProductVersion') AS Version, SERVERPROPERTY('ProductUpdateLevel') AS CU;
- Edition should show
Standard Edition (64-bit). - Version should begin with
15., confirming SQL Server 2019. - The CU column shows the cumulative update level, so you can check you are on the final 2019 CU.
- The Installed SQL Server features discovery report under Tools in the Installation Center gives the same information for every instance.
Keeping SQL Server 2019 secure in extended support
Because SQL Server 2019 now receives security fixes only, patch discipline matters more than it did during mainstream support. A few simple habits keep the server safe until you are ready to move to a newer release:
- Install the final SQL Server 2019 cumulative update, then every security update Microsoft publishes for it through Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog.
- Keep the instance off the public internet. Allow TCP 1433 in Windows Defender Firewall only from your internal network or VPN.
- Use Windows authentication where possible, disable the
salogin if you do not need it, and grant applications the minimum permissions they require. - Schedule full and transaction log backups with SQL Server Agent and test a restore regularly.
- Plan your upgrade path before January 2030 so the move to a supported version happens on your schedule, not in a rush.
Troubleshooting common errors
| Error or message | What it means and how to fix it |
|---|---|
| The product key is invalid | Make sure you are using SQL Server 2019 media; 2022 and 2025 installers do not accept 2019 keys. Retype the key and check for confusable characters. |
| Evaluation period has expired | Your 180-day trial ended. Run Maintenance > Edition Upgrade with your Standard key to restore service without losing data. |
| 0x84B40002: This SQL Server edition upgrade is not supported | You are moving from a higher edition to Standard. Back up, uninstall and reinstall with the Standard key. |
| 0x851A001A: Wait on the Database Engine recovery handle failed | Check the SQL error log. Common causes are NVMe drives on Windows 11 reporting a sector size above 4 KB, or a service account without rights. Apply Microsoft's sector-size fix or change the account, then reinstall. |
| 0x84B40000: SQL Server Setup has encountered an error | A generic failure; open Summary.txt in the Setup Bootstrap Log folder to find the real cause, often a pending reboot or damaged media. |
| Rule 'Restart computer' failed | Restart Windows to clear pending file operations, then click Re-run. |
Frequently asked questions
Is SQL Server 2019 still supported?
Yes, in extended support. Mainstream support ended on 1 March 2025, and security updates continue until 9 January 2030. No new cumulative updates or features are released.
Why buy SQL Server 2019 instead of a newer version?
Mainly for application compatibility, when a vendor certifies only 2019, or to match other servers in your estate. If you have a free choice, newer releases offer longer support; see our SQL Server 2022 Standard guide for the next version up.
Does SQL Server 2019 Standard need activating online?
No. Entering the key during Setup or Edition Upgrade activates the edition. There is no internet or phone activation step.
Can I install SQL Server 2019 on Windows Server 2025?
Yes. Microsoft lists Windows Server 2025 as a supported operating system for SQL Server 2019, along with Windows Server 2016, 2019 and 2022.
How many cores and how much memory can Standard use?
SQL Server 2019 Standard uses up to the lesser of 4 sockets or 24 cores and 128 GB of memory for the buffer pool.
Do I need to install SSMS separately?
Yes. SQL Server Management Studio is a free, separate download from Microsoft Learn and is not part of SQL Server 2019 Setup.
