SQL Server 2022 Standard: Download, Install & Activation Guide

Softkeyworld Team · 02 October 2026

To download, install and activate SQL Server 2022 Standard, get the official media (your order link, Volume Licensing or the Microsoft Evaluation Center ISO), run setup.exe as administrator, choose New SQL Server standalone installation and type your Standard key on the Product Key page. Converting an Evaluation instance? Run Maintenance > Edition Upgrade and enter the key there.

SQL Server 2022 (version 16.x) launched in November 2022 and is the most widely deployed current release of Microsoft's database engine. It is mature, has years of cumulative updates behind it and remains in mainstream support until January 2028, which makes it a safe choice for line-of-business applications that have certified against it. This guide covers the full process for the Standard edition sold under the Server + Device CAL model, from preparing the server to confirming the edition in SQL Server Management Studio. If you still need a licence, you can order a genuine SQL Server 2022 Standard Device CAL key and receive it by email immediately after payment.

What you need before you start

  • Your SQL Server 2022 Standard product key from your order email.
  • A 64-bit Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022 or 2025 machine for production, or Windows 10 (version 1607 or later) / Windows 11 for development and testing.
  • Administrator rights on the server and a decision on which Windows or domain accounts will run the SQL Server services.
  • .NET Framework 4.7.2, which SQL Server 2022 Setup requires.
  • At least 6 GB of free disk space for the installation, plus separate storage for data, logs and backups.
  • A full backup of any existing instance you plan to upgrade.
Requirement SQL Server 2022 Standard
Operating system Windows Server 2025, 2022, 2019 or 2016 (including Server Core); Windows 11 or Windows 10 1607+
Processor x64 only, 1.4 GHz minimum, 2.0 GHz or faster recommended
Memory 1 GB minimum, 4 GB or more recommended
Disk space 6 GB minimum free
Software .NET Framework 4.7.2
Standard edition limits Lesser of 4 sockets or 24 cores; 128 GB buffer pool memory; 524 PB maximum database size

SQL Server 2022 is the newest release that still supports Windows Server 2016, so it is the natural choice if you cannot upgrade an older host yet. Disks must report a 512-byte or 4 KB sector size; some modern NVMe drives on Windows 11 report larger values and cause start-up failures (see the troubleshooting table). Full details are on Microsoft's SQL Server 2022 requirements page.

How the Device CAL model works

With Server + Device CAL licensing you licence the server running SQL Server 2022 Standard, then buy one Device CAL for every PC, laptop, terminal or handheld that accesses it, no matter how many people use that device. It suits shift work, shared tills and warehouse scanners, where several staff share one machine. Device CALs are not entered in Setup or anywhere in SQL Server; they are licence entitlements you keep on record. Only the server key goes into the installer.

If the opposite is true and each employee uses several devices (a desktop, a laptop and a tablet, for example), User CALs usually work out more efficient. For public websites or apps with an unknown number of users, per-core licensing is the correct model, because CALs cannot cover anonymous external users.

Step 1: Download SQL Server 2022 Standard

  1. Use the download link in your Softkeyworld order email. Customers with a Microsoft Volume Licensing agreement can also take the SQL Server 2022 Standard ISO from the Volume Licensing portal, where the key is already embedded.
  2. Or download the free 180-day trial from the SQL Server 2022 Evaluation Center. You can install it and convert it to Standard with your key at any point during the trial.
  3. Launch the downloaded SQL2022-SSEI-Eval.exe (or similar) and choose Download Media > ISO to save a full image you can keep for reinstalls.
  4. Right-click the ISO and choose Mount, or copy its contents to a local folder on Server Core.
  5. Separately download SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS 22 is current) and, if you need it, SQL Server 2022 Reporting Services, which has been a separate installer since SQL Server 2017.

Avoid any ISO from torrent sites or unofficial mirrors. If you have lost your download link, email support@softkeyworld.com and we will resend it; you can also read how delivery works on our download and activation page.

Step 2: Install SQL Server 2022 Standard

  1. Open the mounted drive, right-click setup.exe and select Run as administrator.
  2. In the SQL Server Installation Center, click Installation > New SQL Server standalone installation or add features to an existing installation.
  3. On the Edition page, choose Enter the product key, type your SQL Server 2022 Standard key and click Next. You will also see a Use pay-as-you-go billing through Microsoft Azure option; leave it unselected because you are using a perpetual key.
  4. Accept the licence terms and allow Setup to check Microsoft Update for the latest installer fixes.
  5. Review the Install Rules. Clear any failures (restart Windows, install .NET Framework 4.7.2) and click Re-run.
  6. SQL Server 2022 introduced an Azure Extension for SQL Server page. Clear the checkbox unless you want to manage the server through Azure Arc; it is not required for licensing.
  7. On Feature Selection, tick Database Engine Services. Add Full-Text and Semantic Extractions for Search or PolyBase Query Service for External Data only if your applications use them.
  8. Choose a Default instance or name a Named instance, then set service accounts on Server Configuration. Change SQL Server Agent to Automatic start if you plan to schedule backups.
  9. On Database Engine Configuration, pick Windows or Mixed Mode authentication, add yourself with Add Current User, and point the Data Directories and TempDB tabs at your data drives.
  10. Click Install, wait for every feature to show Succeeded, then click Close and restart if prompted.

Step 3: Activate your SQL Server 2022 Standard licence

There is no separate online or telephone activation for SQL Server. The edition is set by the key you enter, and once Setup completes with a Standard key your licence is active. If you skipped the key or began on Evaluation or Developer edition, switch to Standard with Edition Upgrade.

Method A: Edition Upgrade wizard

  1. Run setup.exe from your SQL Server 2022 media as administrator.
  2. Select Maintenance in the left pane, then Edition Upgrade.
  3. On the Product Key page, enter your SQL Server 2022 Standard key and click Next.
  4. Accept the licence terms and select the instance you want to upgrade.
  5. When the Edition Upgrade Rules pass, click Upgrade. SQL Server services restart during this step, so schedule a short outage.
  6. Click Close when finished and restart Windows if asked.

Method B: Unattended command line

From an elevated Command Prompt in the setup folder, replacing the instance name and key as needed:

setup.exe /q /ACTION=EditionUpgrade /INSTANCENAME=MSSQLSERVER /PID=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS

You can only upgrade to a higher edition. Moving an Enterprise or Enterprise Evaluation instance down to Standard needs a full backup, uninstall and reinstall.

How to verify activation

Connect with SSMS and run:

SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('Edition') AS Edition, SERVERPROPERTY('ProductVersion') AS Version;

  • The edition should read Standard Edition (64-bit).
  • The version should start with 16., which is SQL Server 2022.
  • For a report covering every instance on the machine, open the Installation Center and choose Tools > Installed SQL Server features discovery report.

Once confirmed, apply the latest SQL Server 2022 cumulative update from Microsoft to bring the instance fully up to date.

Post-installation checklist

  • Open SQL Server Configuration Manager > SQL Server Network Configuration > Protocols for MSSQLSERVER and enable TCP/IP if client PCs connect over the network, then restart the SQL Server service.
  • Allow inbound TCP 1433 (or your named instance's port) in Windows Defender Firewall, limited to your internal network.
  • Set max server memory in SSMS (Server Properties > Memory) so Windows keeps a few gigabytes for itself.
  • Create a maintenance plan or SQL Server Agent job for full and log backups, and test a restore.
  • Record the number of devices connecting, so your Device CAL count stays in line with actual use.

Troubleshooting common errors

Error or message What it means and how to fix it
The product key is not valid Confirm you are running SQL Server 2022 media (not 2019 or 2025) and retype the key carefully. Contact support if it still fails.
Evaluation period has expired Your 180-day trial has ended. Run Maintenance > Edition Upgrade with your Standard key; data and settings are preserved.
0x84B40002: This SQL Server edition upgrade is not supported You tried to move from Enterprise or Enterprise Evaluation to Standard. Back up, uninstall and reinstall using your Standard key.
0x851A001A: Wait on the Database Engine recovery handle failed Usually a disk sector size above 4 KB (common with NVMe on Windows 11) or a service account problem. Check the error log, apply Microsoft's documented sector-size registry fix or change the account, then reinstall.
Rule 'Engine_SqlEngineHealthCheck' failed Make sure the instance starts cleanly, then retry Edition Upgrade, adding /SkipRules=Engine_SqlEngineHealthCheck on the command line if necessary.
Azure extension for SQL Server failed to install This is optional. Re-run Setup and clear the Azure extension checkbox, or fix the Azure sign-in details.

Frequently asked questions

Does SQL Server 2022 Standard need internet activation?

No. Entering a valid Standard key during installation or Edition Upgrade activates it. The server can run fully offline after installation.

How many Device CALs do I need?

One for every device that connects to SQL Server, directly or indirectly (for example through an application server). The server licence itself does not include any CALs.

Is SQL Server 2022 still a good choice now that 2025 is out?

Yes, if your software vendor certifies 2022 or you need Windows Server 2016 support. Mainstream support runs until 12 January 2028 and extended support until 12 January 2033. If you want the higher Standard limits and AI features, read our SQL Server 2025 Standard guide.

What are the main SQL Server 2022 features in Standard edition?

Ledger tables for tamper-evident data, Query Store enabled by default, intelligent query processing improvements, backup to S3-compatible object storage, Microsoft Entra authentication and the link feature for Azure SQL Managed Instance.

Can I upgrade SQL Server 2019 or 2017 to 2022 Standard?

Yes. Run the 2022 Setup, choose Upgrade from a previous version of SQL Server, enter your 2022 Standard key and follow the prompts. Back up every database first.

Where is SQL Server Management Studio?

SSMS is a separate free download from Microsoft Learn. Install SSMS 22, which fully supports SQL Server 2022.
