Office 2024 Home & Business: Download, Install & Activation Guide

Softkeyworld Team · 02 October 2026

To download, install and activate Office Home & Business 2024, go to setup.office.com (now also microsoft365.com/setup), sign in with your Microsoft account and enter your 25-character product key. The licence is added to your account. Then open account.microsoft.com/services, select Install on your PC or Mac, and sign in to Word to activate. It activates automatically.

Office Home & Business 2024 is Microsoft's one-time-purchase Office suite for home users and small businesses. It includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote, and the licence allows commercial use. A single licence covers one Windows PC or one Mac. Unlike older volume editions, there is no command-line activation and no phone activation for normal use. The licence lives in your Microsoft account, and Office activates when you sign in. This guide covers both Windows and macOS, the system requirements for each, and fixes for the problems we see most often at Softkeyworld.

If you have not bought a licence yet, our Office 2024 Home & Business for PC/Mac key is a genuine retail key that is emailed to you straight after payment.

What you need before you start

  • Your 25-character Office Home & Business 2024 product key (format XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX), from your order email.
  • A Microsoft account (Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live or any email registered as a Microsoft account). If you don't have one, you can create one for free during setup. Use an account you will keep, because the licence is permanently linked to it.
  • A stable internet connection for the download (about 4 GB on Windows, larger on Mac) and for activation.
  • Administrator rights on Windows, or your Mac login password.
  • Older Office versions removed first if possible. Click-to-Run versions of Office from different years generally can't run side by side.

Mac users: check your macOS version first

Microsoft supports Office for Mac on the current macOS release and the two before it. When Apple releases a new major version, the oldest one is dropped. So the minimum macOS for Office 2024 rises over time. To check your version, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. If your Mac runs macOS 13 Ventura or older, the current Office installer will refuse to run. Update through System Settings > General > Software Update before you start. Office 2024 runs natively on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs, so Rosetta isn't needed.

Step 1: Redeem your key and download Office Home & Business 2024

You only redeem the product key once. After that, the licence stays in your Microsoft account, and you can reinstall from there whenever you need to.

  1. Open a browser and go to setup.office.com. You can also use office.com/setup or microsoft365.com/setup, which all go to the same Microsoft redemption page.
  2. Select Sign in and log in with the Microsoft account you want to keep the licence on. If you don't have one, choose Create one.
  3. Enter your 25-character product key exactly as it appears in your order email. The hyphens are added for you.
  4. Choose your country or region and language, then select Next. Office Home & Business 2024 is now linked to your account.
  5. Go to account.microsoft.com/services (or m365.cloud.microsoft/apps). Office Home & Business 2024 is listed there.
  6. Select Install. Keep the default language and version (64-bit is recommended on Windows) unless you need something else, then select Install again. Windows downloads a small setup file (for example OfficeSetup.exe). Mac downloads Microsoft Office installer.pkg.

Microsoft's own walkthrough, Download, install, or reinstall Microsoft 365 or Office 2024 on a PC or Mac, describes the same steps, in case your screens look slightly different.

Step 2: Install Office

On Windows 11

  1. Open the downloaded OfficeSetup.exe file from your browser's downloads bar or your Downloads folder.
  2. When User Account Control asks "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?", select Yes.
  3. The Click-to-Run installer downloads and installs Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote. This usually takes 5–20 minutes, depending on your connection.
  4. When you see "You're all set! Office is installed now", select Close. The apps appear in the Start menu.

On a Mac

  1. Open Finder > Downloads and double-click Microsoft Office installer.pkg.
  2. Select Continue on the introduction screen, read the licence agreement, then select Continue and Agree.
  3. Keep the default install location and select Install. Enter your Mac login password when asked.
  4. Wait for the installer to finish (the Mac package is large, so allow some time), then select Close. You can let macOS move the installer to the Bin.
  5. Open Word from Launchpad or the Applications folder. Microsoft AutoUpdate may offer updates on first launch, and it's worth installing them.

Step 3: Activate Office Home & Business 2024

Activation is linked to your Microsoft account rather than to a key you type into the app. There is no slmgr or ospp.vbs step for this edition. Microsoft's command-line activation tools are for volume-licensed Office LTSC, not retail Home & Business.

  1. Open any Office app, such as Word.
  2. If the app asks you to sign in, use the same Microsoft account you used at setup.office.com. On a Mac, the "Sign in to activate Office" window appears. Select Sign In.
  3. Accept the licence agreement when it appears.
  4. If more than one Office licence is attached to your account, choose Office Home & Business 2024 from the list (Mac shows this as a licence picker).
  5. Office activates in a few seconds. Close the app and reopen it to make sure no activation banner remains.

That's all there is to it. You don't need a phone call or a confirmation ID, and the activation is permanent for that device. If you later replace your computer, uninstall Office from the old device, then sign in and install from account.microsoft.com/services on the new one.

How to verify Office is activated

  • Windows: open Word, go to File > Account. Under Product Information you should see "Product Activated" and "Microsoft Office Home & Business 2024" (the exact name can vary slightly).
  • Mac: open Word, select Word > About Microsoft Word. The licence line should name Office Home & Business 2024. You can also check Word > Preferences/Settings > Account (or the account icon) to see which account is signed in.
  • Online: account.microsoft.com/services should list Office Home & Business 2024 under your products.

If you see a yellow or red "Unlicensed Product" or "Product Activation Failed" bar, use the troubleshooting table below.

Troubleshooting common errors

Error or message What it means How to fix it
"This product key has already been used" at setup.office.com The key has already been redeemed to a Microsoft account, possibly one of your other accounts. Sign in to account.microsoft.com/services with each of your accounts. If Office appears, install from there. If you didn't redeem it, email support@softkeyworld.com with your order number.
"This product key isn't valid" / "We can't recognise this key" Usually a typing mistake (O vs 0, B vs 8) or a key for a different product. Copy and paste the key from your order email and check you're on setup.office.com, not the Microsoft Store redeem page.
"We couldn't find any Office products" / "Your account doesn't have Office" when signing in The app is signed in with a different Microsoft account from the one you redeemed the key to. Sign out (File > Account > Sign out on Windows, or the account menu on Mac) and sign back in with the account you used at setup.office.com.
Unlicensed Product / Product Activation Failed Office can't confirm the licence. Common causes are the wrong account, an old Office install, or the wrong system date. Check the date, time and time zone are correct, sign out and back in, then restart. On Windows, use the Get Help app's Office activation troubleshooter. Remove any older Office versions.
Error code 0x8004FC12 A Windows licensing or network issue is blocking activation. Temporarily disable VPN/proxy, check your network firewall allows Microsoft activation, then try again. Microsoft publishes a dedicated fix article for this code.
Error 30088-26, 30016-29 or "Something went wrong" during install The installation was interrupted or conflicts with a damaged earlier install. Restart, check your connection and free space, uninstall any partial Office install via Settings > Apps, then run the installer again.
Mac: "This installer requires macOS …" Your macOS version is older than the three versions Office currently supports. Update macOS. If your Mac can't run a supported version, contact us within the 7-day return window before redeeming the key.
Mac keeps asking to activate or shows the wrong licence Leftover licence files from a previous Office for Mac version. Use Microsoft's License Removal Tool for Mac, restart, then sign in again with the correct account.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install Office Home & Business 2024 on both a PC and a Mac?

No. One licence covers one device, which can be either a Windows PC or a Mac. "PC/Mac" means the same key works on either platform, not both at once. You need a separate licence for each device.

Is Office Home & Business 2024 a subscription?

No. It's a one-time purchase. There are no monthly fees, and the apps keep working after activation. It doesn't include Microsoft 365 extras such as 1 TB of OneDrive storage or new feature updates. You get security and quality updates until Microsoft's end-of-support date for Office 2024, which is October 2029.

Can I use Office Home & Business 2024 for my business?

Yes. Unlike Office Home 2024, the Home & Business edition includes rights for commercial use, and it also adds Outlook for email and calendars.

Do I need a Microsoft account to activate it?

Yes. Retail Office 2024 keys are redeemed to a Microsoft account at setup.office.com, and that account is what you sign in with to activate and to reinstall later. Keep the account details safe.

How do I move Office 2024 to a new computer?

Uninstall Office from the old computer, then sign in at account.microsoft.com/services on the new one and select Install. You don't need to enter the key again.

Which Office 2024 edition should I choose?

For most home offices, freelancers and small teams on Windows or Mac, Home & Business 2024 is enough, because it covers Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote. If you need Microsoft Access on a Windows PC, look at Professional Plus instead. Our Office 2024 Professional Plus guide explains how that edition installs and activates.
