To install Office 2016 Professional Plus or Professional, use the method that matches your key. For account-redeemable keys, redeem at setup.office.com and install from account.microsoft.com/services. For other keys, use the official download link in your order email or the Office Deployment Tool. Then open Word and activate online or by phone. Support ended on 14 October 2025.
Office 2016 Professional Plus and Office Professional 2016 are Windows-only, one-time-purchase suites. Professional Plus includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Access, Publisher and Skype for Business. Professional has the same apps without Skype for Business. They are still popular because they work without a subscription. However, how you install them depends on the type of key you have, and this confuses many buyers. This guide explains each route, both activation methods (online and telephone) and the command-line tools for anyone who prefers them.
An honest note about support
Microsoft ended support for Office 2016 on 14 October 2025. Your apps keep working after activation, but Microsoft no longer releases security fixes, bug fixes or phone/chat support for them. You can read the details on Microsoft's end of support for Office 2016 and Office 2019 page. Office 2016 is still a reasonable choice for an offline PC, for compatibility with older templates and macros, or for a tight budget. For a computer that handles lots of email attachments and web content, a supported version is safer. Our Office 2024 Professional Plus guide covers the current equivalent.
What you need before you start
- Your 25-character product key and the order email from Softkeyworld. The email tells you which installation route your key uses.
- A Windows PC with administrator rights.
- Any other Office version uninstalled first (Settings > Apps). Mixing Office versions is the most common cause of install and activation errors.
- An internet connection for the download. Phone-activation keys also need a phone (or the Microsoft activation number for your country).
- Optional: a Microsoft account, if your key is redeemed through setup.office.com.
Which key do you have?
| Product | Typical install route | Activation |
|---|---|---|
| Office 2016 Professional Plus | Official download link supplied with your order | Online in the app, or by phone if online activation is refused |
| Office Professional 2016 | Redeem at setup.office.com, then install from your Microsoft account | Online, by signing in to the same account |
| Office Pro Plus 2016 retail phone keys | Official download link in your order email. The key does not bind to a Microsoft account | By telephone (permanent, one PC, not transferable) |
If you bought the Office 2016 Professional Plus for Windows listing, follow the route printed in your order email. If you're unsure, email support@softkeyworld.com before installing.

Step 1: Download Office 2016
Route A: account-redeemable keys (setup.office.com)
- Go to setup.office.com and sign in with your Microsoft account, or create one.
- Enter your 25-character product key, choose your country and language, and select Next.
- Open account.microsoft.com/services, find Office 2016 and select Install. Microsoft may hide older versions after end of support. If no install option appears, email support@softkeyworld.com and we'll send the official download link.
Route B: official download link (Professional Plus and phone keys)
- Open the official Microsoft download link in your order email. Depending on the edition, it downloads either a small Click-to-Run setup file or a disc image (.img/.iso).
- Save the file to your Downloads folder. Don't use download links from forums or file-sharing sites, because those files may be modified.
Route C: Office Deployment Tool (advanced users)
- Download the Office Deployment Tool from Microsoft and extract it to a folder, for example
C:\ODT. - Create a file called
config.xmlin that folder that names product IDProPlusRetail(Professional Plus) orProfessionalRetail(Professional), withOfficeClientEdition="64"and your language, such asen-gb. - Open Command Prompt as administrator and run
cd C:\ODT, thensetup.exe /download config.xml.
Step 2: Install Office 2016
- Uninstall any other Office version and restart your PC.
- For a Click-to-Run setup file, double-click it and select Yes at the User Account Control prompt. For an .img or .iso file, double-click to mount it and run
setup.exe. With ODT, runsetup.exe /configure config.xmlfrom an administrator Command Prompt. - If the installer asks for a product key (disc-image installers usually do), enter your key and accept the licence terms.
- Choose Install Now, or select Customise to pick the apps and install location.
- Wait for "You're all set" or "Office has been installed", then select Close.
Step 3: Activate Office 2016
Online activation
- Open Word or Excel. If you installed through your Microsoft account, sign in with that account when prompted, and activation completes automatically.
- Otherwise, go to File > Account > Change Product Key (or use the activation prompt), enter your 25-character key and select Install/Continue.
- In the Activation Wizard, choose I want to activate the software over the Internet and select Next.
Telephone activation (phone keys, or when online activation is refused)
- In the Activation Wizard, choose I want to activate the software by telephone.
- Select your country. The wizard shows a phone number and a 63-digit Installation ID in nine groups.
- Call the number and enter the Installation ID when the automated system asks for it. Answer the question about how many PCs the software is installed on with "1".
- Type the Confirmation ID you are given into boxes A–H and select Next.
Our step-by-step guide to activating Office 2016 and 2019 by telephone includes screenshots and fixes for when the automated line won't accept an ID.
Command-line alternative (OSPP.VBS)
Open Command Prompt as administrator and change to the Office folder. Use cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16" for 64-bit Office, or cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16" for 32-bit Office on 64-bit Windows. Then run:
-
cscript ospp.vbs /inpkey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXXinstalls your key. -
cscript ospp.vbs /actactivates online. -
cscript ospp.vbs /dinstidshows the Installation ID for phone activation. -
cscript ospp.vbs /actcid:CONFIRMATIONIDapplies the Confirmation ID you receive by phone (digits only, no spaces).
How to verify activation
- Open Word and go to File > Account. Under Product Information you should see "Product Activated" and "Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2016" or "Microsoft Office Professional 2016".
- Alternatively, run
cscript ospp.vbs /dstatusfrom the Office16 folder. Look forLICENSE STATUS: ---LICENSED---and check the last five characters of the key match yours.
Using Office 2016 safely after end of support
Because Office 2016 no longer gets security patches, it's worth making a few small changes once it's activated:
- Install the final updates. Microsoft doesn't release new patches, but if you installed from an older image, the last available updates may still be missing. On Click-to-Run installs, go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now. On disc-image installs, turn on "Give me updates for other Microsoft products" in Windows Update.
- Leave Protected View on. Under File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings, keep Protected View enabled for files from the internet and Outlook attachments.
- Keep macros disabled unless you trust a document completely. Most attacks through older Office versions start with a malicious macro or attachment.
- Keep Windows supported and patched. A fully updated operating system and Microsoft Defender protect you from many threats that Office no longer covers itself.
- Back up your work to OneDrive or an external drive, so a problem with an old installation never costs you documents.
Office 2016 also needs a supported way to connect to email services. Outlook 2016 can still open local PST files and standard IMAP/POP accounts. However, Microsoft has stopped supporting Office 2016 connections to Microsoft 365 services such as Exchange Online, so connections to those may stop working without warning. If your business email runs on Microsoft 365, plan to upgrade.
Tips for a smooth telephone activation
- Write the Installation ID down, or keep the wizard open on screen, before you dial. The automated system asks for it in blocks.
- Call from a quiet place and use the keypad rather than speaking the digits. Voice recognition often mishears long numbers.
- If the system says the ID is not recognised, hang up, check the digits on screen and call again. If it fails a second time, email us a screenshot of the wizard.
- Don't close the Activation Wizard until you've entered the full Confirmation ID and seen "Thank you. Your copy is now activated."
Troubleshooting common errors
| Error | Meaning | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 0xC004C008 | The key has reached its online activation limit. | Activate by telephone using the steps above. This is expected for phone-activation keys. |
| 0xC004F074 | Office is trying to reach a KMS server (common with volume installers). | Install your own key with /inpkey, then run /act or use phone activation. |
| 0xC004F050 | Office rejected the key as invalid for this installation. | Check the key, and check that the installed edition matches. A Professional Plus key won't activate a Professional install or a Home & Business install. |
| 0xC004C003 | The activation server has blocked the key. | Don't retry repeatedly. Email support@softkeyworld.com with your order number and a screenshot. |
| 0x80070005 (access denied) | The command prompt isn't elevated. | Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. |
| "This product key has already been used" at setup.office.com | The key was redeemed to a Microsoft account earlier, or it's a phone key that doesn't use account redemption. | Check account.microsoft.com/services, or follow Route B for phone keys. |
| "Confirmation ID is not valid" | A digit was entered incorrectly. | Re-enter all eight blocks carefully. If you're not sure, call again for a fresh ID. |
Frequently asked questions
Does Office 2016 still work after 14 October 2025?
Yes. Activated Office 2016 apps keep working. Microsoft simply stopped releasing security updates and providing support, so keep Windows and your antivirus up to date.
What is the difference between Office 2016 Professional Plus and Professional?
Both include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Access and Publisher. Professional Plus also adds Skype for Business. Both editions are activated in the same way.
Can I reinstall Office 2016 on a new PC?
Account-redeemed keys can be reinstalled from account.microsoft.com/services after you remove Office from the old PC. Phone-activation keys are permanent for the first PC and can't be transferred.
Why does my key only activate by phone?
Some retail Professional Plus keys are supplied for telephone activation. This is normal and the activation is permanent. The automated line issues a Confirmation ID in a few minutes.
Does Office 2016 work on Windows 11?
Yes, Office 2016 installs and runs on Windows 10 and 11. However, because Office 2016 is now out of support, Microsoft no longer tests it against new Windows updates.
